Religious zealot and old leather couch Pat Robertson is about as un-American as any Constitution-hating evangelical can be. People like this 1920’s catchers mitt think that it’s part of some benevolent creator’s plan that we instill a stale bag of Cheetos with the most powerful position any man can have. And this odious character with absolutely no moral fiber is using his “Christian” television network to tell his brainwashed following that to revolt against Trump is to revolt against God.
Let’s set the record straight. Being able to question your elected officials is uniquely American. To blindly follow any politician without questioning them is relieving them of accountability. No politician from either party is beyond reproach. It is the duty of the well-informed voter to constantly question those they place in power. This is how you know that the majority of Trump supporters have the mentality of turncoats during the American Revolution.
In fact, Rachel Maddow recently showed her audience a Public Policy Poll that claimed 51% of Trump supporters thought Trump should be above the rule of law and the Constitution to carry out his agenda. Many of these sycophants may not see the irony in their claims to be patriotic Americans while simultaneously thinking that one branch of government should be able to overrule the other two branches. That is not what our Founding Fathers had in mind when they created our democracy.
And just for the record, they didn’t think we were a Christian nation either. Many of our Founders were deists. And they believed that the separation of church and state was paramount to maintaining our democracy and the liberties enjoyed by millions of Americans today. The Greeks may have brought democracy to the world but the United States made it cool.
But Pat Robertson has a different idea.
“I think, somehow, the Lord’s plan is being put in place for America and these people are not only revolting against Trump, they’re revolting against what God’s plan is for America. These other people have been trying to destroy America. These left-wingers and so-called progressives are trying to destroy the country that we love and take away the freedoms they love. They want collectivism. They want socialism. What we’re looking at is free markets and freedom from this terrible, overarching bureaucracy. They want to fight as much as they can but I think the good news is the Bible says, “He that sits in the heavens will laugh them to scorn,” and I think that Trump’s someone on his side that is a lot more powerful than the media.”
Pat Robertson, a man opposed to divorce unless you have Alzheimer’s; who thinks it’s only okay to cheat on your spouse if you have a penis; who blamed Haitians for the earthquake that rocked the island nation by claiming that their ancestors had made a pact with the devil; thinks that Trump is anointed by his God to rule the United States.
That Robertson has this ridiculous view is not in itself harmful to our democracy. What is harmful is that he spreads these falsehoods to the low information audience that frequents his channel. This is part of the dumbing down of America. Knowing what these people think is the only way to combat them.
