I’m gonna go way out on a limb here and make a prediction: The narrative from now until November 8th is going to shift towards women in positions of power. And it has absolutely nothing to do with the Democratic presumptive nominee, Hillary Clinton, being a woman—this isn’t her first rodeo, after all. It has to do with the Republican presumptive presidential nominee, Donald Trump, being an imbecile.
Trump has had poor approval ratings with female voters all along, but over the past few weeks he’s really doubled-down on the faux presidential stupid. First it was the interview where he said “women who have abortions should be punished.” And then just this past week, he said this: “Hillary is playing the women’s card. Frankly, if Hillary Clinton were a man, I don’t think she’d get 5% of the vote.”
How stupid is this man? Is he under the impression the female vote is just some inconsequential niche like the Inuit vote? There are times when I wonder just how badly he wants the presidency, because he’s doing everything imaginable to keep from getting it. Here are some stats that the Donald apparently isn’t aware of.
• Women make up over half of the electorate. Something like 51%-52%.
• During the 2012 General Election, 53% of all votes cast for president were cast by women. And of those, 55% voted for Barack Obama.
• National polls show Trump’s disapproval rating amongst registered women voters range between 66% and 75%. And those polls were taken BEFORE the Donald’s latest idiocy.
So do the math. If the Democrats can mine just a fraction of that disaffection amongst undecided or even Republican women (and it’s already begun: the campaign is already offering “women’s card” souvenirs), then Trump is in store for an historic ass-whooping. Even if Trump manages to hold on to the traditional old white fart vote, their mothers, wives and daughters are going to bolt en masse (methinks there are gonna be a lot of cold beds in the red states)! You just can’t belittle the biggest voting block in the country without them noticing … and I do believe many have taken notice.
Yes, I know, neither Trump nor Hillary are the official candidates of their respective parties just yet, and even if Trump defeats Cruz next week in Indiana, there’s no guarantee the party isn’t cooking up a little skullduggery on his behalf when they get to Cleveland. But as things stand NOW, on April 30th 2016, the trend is careening towards a Trump vs Clinton matchup. And their respective genders aside, I believe the Donald opened up a yuuuuuuge can of worms with his latest misogyny. Unless I’m missing something, I believe the women of this country—even many who don’t care for Hillary Clinton—will come out in droves to reject this fool.
2016 may in fact be remembered as the Year of the Woman. Thanks in no small part, to the ignorance of one man: Donald J. Trump.
