For months now, the American media have been obsessed with Donald Trump, Ted Cruz and most of the GOP playing to fears and the lowest common denominators among us. Talk of hate, indiscriminate carpet bombing and glorifying fanatics and terrorists as the bringers of World War III. In his State of the Union speech, President Obama brought much of the hyperbole and fiction back to reality. Obama began by talking about some truths. Facts like we are the most powerful military in the world. We spend more on our military than the next eight nations combined. We have the best-trained fighting force in the history of — ever. Any talk of America being weak and enemies being stronger was severely rebuffed.
Obama certainly acknowledged the threats and showed no problems in understanding them, as some of his critics assert. He pointed out that much of the over the top rhetoric on the campaign trail that “builds up” ISIL is simply what they want. They are essentially playing right into the terrorist’s hands. He wisely pointed out that while terrorists can wreak havok in our lives, should they attack — that is no threat to our nation, and we need to start acting like it. Unlike what the GOP Presidential candidates want everyone to believe.
This was reality vs Reality TV.
He then went on to explain that we are already doing, in a smart way, many of the things that his opponents are calling for. Obama also challenged Congress to give him an authorization of force resolution “if they are serious” about taking out ISIL. The President was also realistic in pointing out various regions that could fall to terrorism or ethnic conflicts. His outlook was realistic and sober about the real threats vs imagined ones.
The President was spot on. Tough and smart, pointing out the difference between campaign bluster and reality. He also did a bit of a victory lap in pointing out all the terrorist leaders his administration has taken out, including Osama Bin Laden. There was little doubt in the President’s sincerity and understanding of the problem of terrorism. He vowed to take out terrorists who threaten America in no uncertain, but smart terms;
‘It may take time, but we have long memories and our reach has no limits.’
‘Our answer has to be more than tough talk, or carpet bombing civillians. That might work as a TV soundbyte, but it doesn’t pass muster on the international stage.’
