This is truly ‘video the police did not want you to see.’ The lawyers for several media and press organizations fought for months to have it released. Police and the city of Gardena, California resisted. Finally on July 14th, 2015 a judge ordered this tape released.
The scenario is cops were informed that a bike was stolen locally. The event happened late at night in early June of 2013. They were misinformed by the dispatcher that it was a “robbery” which usually included or implied possible weapons use in the seizing of a bike. In reality, the bike was just taken with no resistance or real-time knowledge by the owner.
The owner of the bike enlisted some friends to help him find the bike. The cops come on the scene, see the friends riding bikes and stop them as suspects. No one knows what happened in between the initial apprehension and this grizzly and barbaric slaying of the men as it is clear that they are unarmed, innocent and were actually trying to HELP find the bike.
One of the men seems confused but isn’t a threat by any measure. Keep in mind, these aren’t criminals. They are just three friends out late at night trying to help find their friend’s bike.
For being good friends, they were murdered by Gardena, California police. Policemen who were too quick to pull the trigger even when they weren’t threatened.
The next time someone tells you “if you didn’t do anything wrong, you have nothing to fear” — remember this clip.

The police still to this day call this “justified” officially despite paying out millions to the victims’ families.
UPDATE: AN earlier version of this story identified the men as ‘teens” when they were, in fact, adults. The man killed was 34 years old.
