Trump Will Forever Be Known As The Illegitimate President

Now that the FBI, the CIA and the NSA are all on the same page regarding the hack of the DNC servers, Republicans are starting to come around to accepting it. Reluctantly, to be sure, but better late than never. Trump himself hasn’t yet, but he’s a little slow. He still thinks Roe vs Wade was the decision George Washington faced when crossing the Delaware.

“It is not enough to say―and people should be very careful about this―they say, ‘Well, it didn’t actually have an impact on the election. The fact that Russian efforts were incompetent or insufficient shouldn’t make us feel better. If Japan had attacked Pearl Harbor and all of its bombs and torpedoes had missed, no Americans killed, no ships sunk, would we have said no harm, no foul? No, it’s the effort that they made, if this is accurate, that should trouble us. Not the fact that it failed.”

~ The Mustache of Fury, John Bolton December 30th, 2016

This is a typical reaction from the right. Bolton’s saying, okay, so it’s true. But Obama’s still a pansy for not blowing up something full of Russians (the article was lengthy—he says Obama’s sanctions don’t go far enough. He wants to see some action, damn it).

But here’s the part that gets me, and it’s a talking point we can expect to hear much, MUCH more of over the next four years. Bolton says; “Well, it didn’t actually have an impact on the election.” And farther down; “It’s the effort that they made, if this is accurate, that should trouble us. Not the fact that it failed.”

Pardon me Mr. Mustache, but how do you know it failed? Nowhere in the report that I’ve read does it suggest the Russian meddling “failed.” Yet you said it twice in one idiotic paragraph. Whether it was successful or unsuccessful isn’t mentioned anywhere in the report. One thing both Democrats and Republicans should be able to agree on, is that there’s no method available for confirming if it did or didn’t. Yet here you are, getting the dung ball rolling; “Well, the Russians might have tried to screw with our election, but thank God it failed, and Donald Trump won fair and square!” (insert #Lindnersnark icon here: ⚡️ That’s not an actual Bolton quote. But you can bet your ass you’ll soon be hearing it in one form or another).

Nope, that statement, which has already been crafted, probably by Herr Luntz, is presently being honed and buffed up by the professional turd polisher within the Trump campaign team (I’m looking at you #KellyanneConjob) will soon be coming to a Twitter feed or Facebook post near you.

The reality is otherwise. We don’t know that it failed. It might have. It might have succeeded beyond Putin’s wildest dreams. There’s no metric to prove it one way or the other. Under the circumstances, it’s simply unknowable. Unless you’re John Bolton, apparently.

What we can say with absolute certitude however, is this: Neither the Comey interference eleven days before the election nor the leaks fed to WikiLeaks made a single voter MORE likely to vote for Hillary Clinton than for Donald Trump. I defy any of you Trumpettes to make the case to the contrary. It hurt her badly. As per the plan. But it’s impossible to say that the two combined made enough of a difference to swing the election—though anybody with an I.Q. above room temperature should be able to conclude that they did.

That unknown is what will forever dog the Trump presidency. That what if. Had there been no Russian hackers… no WikiLeaks… no FBI bungling the email freakout… no two years spent trying to paint her responsible for the four deaths at Benghazi. Imagine had there been an equal degree of shenanigans directed at the Trump campaign from the FBI, WikiLeaks or foreign powers… what then?

Nope. Sorry, Captain Furious. Those open questions are why history will forever place an asterisk after the name of the 45th President of the United States. Because it can never be positively established that Donald Trump* won fair & square. To the contrary, all evidence suggests he had a little help from his friends. Even a thousand years from now, he will forever be known as the illegitimate President.

And his supporters who will claim otherwise are as pathologically disoriented as he is. They’ll stand by their #IllegitimatePresident to the bitter end.
