Dear Right-Wing Conspiracy Theorists: Here’s The Real ‘Secret Society’

If you follow politics you’ll have read about the “scandal” of the “FBI texts.” This scandal involves two FBI employees, Peter Strzok and Lisa Page. The pair exchanged text messages about everything between heaven and earth, including presidential candidates. This isn’t really odd, considering it was in the middle of an election, and they were having an affair. But GOP’ers and Fox News have been trying to make it into something nefarious for quite a while, and now they think they have their smoking gun.

The FBI “Secret Society?” to Undermine Trump?

Apparently, one of the text messages said “Perhaps this is the first meeting of the secret society,” and anyone with a teeny tiny sense of satire would take it for what it was: tongue-in-cheek. But not the GOP; they’re going full Dan Brown with Fox News cheering them on (big surprise!).

Maybe we shouldn’t be too shocked about this because when it comes to “secret societies,” the GOP has a history. No, really, there was a secret society, but it wasn’t in the FBI.

The Real Secret Society in the US Government

On January 20th, 2009, the very day President Barack Obama was sworn in for the first time, a group of men held a meeting in which they made a pact to “undermine the presidency,” to use a very favored current right-wing phrase.

The participants were the following:

Frank Luntz (Republican Party strategist), Newt Gingrich (former Speaker of the House), Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA), Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R-TX), Rep. Pete Hoekstra (R-MI), Rep. Dan Lungren (R-CA), Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI), Rep. Pete Sessions (R-TX), Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK), Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN), Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC), Sen. John Ensign (R-NV), and Sen. Jon Kyl (R-AZ).

These men pledged to block and obstruct President Obama on any and all legislation, and time has certainly shown this to be the case. Mitch McConnell even said in 2010 “The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president.” Luckily, that didn’t go so well for the Ole’ Turtle.

So, the next time a troll starts yelling about “obstructionism” and “secret societies,” show ’em this article. Maybe it will help (who are we kidding?) to sow a seed of doubt in the right-wing mire of their mind.

There was a secret society to undermine a president, regardless of the good or bad that man did. It just wasn’t in the FBI, by Democrats, or against Trump.
