Some right-wing Christians balk at voting for a twice-divorced, casino-owning, potty-mouthed charlatan like Donald Trump. But not Pastor Robert Jeffress.
Why? Because Jesus is weak on terrorism. Right Wing Watch reports Robert Jeffress, pastor of the 12,000-member First Baptist megachurch in Dallas, sees Donald Trump as the only one who can beat terrorists and Hillary Clinton.
In early July, the conservative New York Times columnist Peter Wehner bashed Robert Jeffress for endorsing a two-bit, “Two-Corinthians” misquoting heathen like Donald Trump. Smelling blood, the right-wing talk radio host Mike Gallagher then invited Wehner and Jeffress to duke it out on his show.
Robert Jeffress: God loves a “strongman.”
On the air, Pastor Robert Jeffress explained that he believes Donald Trump “was the only one who was electable and could beat Hillary Clinton.”
Because, for all his talk about loving Jesus, Robert Jeffress doesn’t want some goddamned hippy in the White House. Citing another debate he had on the air, Jeffress explained:
“But as far as his worldview, Trump’s worldview, you know… I was debating an evangelical professor on NPR and this professor said, ‘Pastor, don’t you want a candidate who embodies the teaching of Jesus and would govern this country according to the principles found in the Sermon on the Mount?’ I said, ‘Heck no.’ I would run from that candidate as far as possible, because the Sermon on the Mount was not given as a governing principle for this nation.
Because, as Robert Jeffress sees it, God has different rules for ordinary people and for people in government.
“Nowhere is government told to forgive those who wrong it. Nowhere is government told to turn the other cheek. Government is to be a strongman to protect its citizens against evildoers. When I’m looking for somebody who’s going to deal with ISIS and exterminate ISIS, I don’t care about that candidate’s tone or vocabulary. I want the meanest, toughest, son of a you-know-what I can find. And I believe that’s biblical.”
In other words, Jesus’ teachings of peace, love, equality and tolerance don’t apply to the likes of Donald Trump. Instead, Pastor Robert Jeffress believes our nation’s leaders should behave like the angry, violent patriarchs of the Old Testament.
Wow. Now the Christian Right’s deranged and hypocritical thought processes make a bit more sense.
