How does Donald Trump celebrate Hispanic Heritage month? By saying ‘we love Puerto Rico’ with a cartoon accent. Seriously, you can’t make this stuff up.
On Friday, the White House website proudly announced, “More than 200 Hispanic business, community, and faith leaders from across the country gathered at the White House to hear remarks from President Trump, Secretary Alex Acosta of the Department of Undermining Labor, and Treasurer Jovita Carranza from the Department of Treasury.
Held from Sept. 15-Oct. 15, Hispanic Heritage Month honors the independence days of Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica. This month is also meant to highlight the many contributions Hispanics have made to our nation and our culture.
Flanked by First Lady Melania Trump, Alex Acosta, and Jovita Carranza, the GOP’s president took the stage and assured us the White House is “martialing [sic.] every federal resource at our disposal” in our relief efforts for Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
It’s a good thing he’s finally figured out they’re both parts of the United States. But it took about a week, plus a lot of reaming from journalists, political leaders, and public figures like former DNC chair Donna Brazile. Oh, and Carmen Yulín Cruz, the mayor of Puerto Rico’s largest city in San Juan, was reduced to pleading on national TV, “I am begging. Begging anyone who can hear us. Save us from dying. I am mad as hell because my people’s lives are at stake.”
Too bad he ruined this special moment with his bizarre and totally-not-racist cartoon pronunciation of the words “Puerto Rico.” Or as ABC News mildly puts it, “played with a Spanish Accent.”
“We’re also praying for the people of Pwherrrrtoh Reekoh, We love Pwherrrrtoh Reekoh. Pwherrrrtoh. And we also love Puerto Rico.”
The crowd laughed and applauded. It’s unclear whether any of that was nervous laughter. While ABC’s news report let Donald Trump off lightly, Dan Linden from ABC’s social media division tweeted out the video with a dollop of snark. “Pres. Trump: “PUerto Rico. We love PUerto Rico,” the tweet quotes. “And we also love Puerto Rico.”

What the White House’s website and ABC don’t mention is the man’s giant fail whale of a visit to Puerto Rico on Tuesday.
Saw a new angle of when DT was throw'n paper towels in PR, like he's play'n the old Pop-A-Shot basketball arcade. One guy didn't want 'em🤔😂😒 pic.twitter.com/0MMuwr5RVY

Needless to say, Donald Trump is not at all popular in Puerto Rico … or in the rest of the U.S.
