Kimberly Houzah was shopping in a The Victoria’s Secret store in Oxford, Alabama. While she was shopping, the store’s management catches and chases another person out of the store for attempting to shoplift. the manager then turns to the other patrons and announces that ‘anyone who is with her needs to leave.’
Since Kimberly wasn’t with her, she continued about her shopping. The manager then, according to Kimberly, approaches her and another customer and tells them both to leave. Were they with the thief? No. Were they doing anything wrong or suspicious? No.
Their crime? The shoplifter was black, and so were they — Guilty of ‘shopping while black.’ Since the shoplifter was black, then the manager ascertained that all the black people in the store must be affiliated. Racism doesn’t get much more blatant and stark than what happened at this Victoria’s Secret store in Alabama.
This shopper wasn’t going to take the abuse lying down, however. She immediately whipped out her phone and posted video footage (see below) to Facebook. The manager, according to her, kept insisting they leave yet refused to tell them why. Kimberly repeatedly asked for an explanation but was denied. Again, the only commonality between her and the person who was stealing was that they were both black.
None of the white patrons were harassed, approached or asked to leave.
Kimberly’s video got over a half a million views in short order and lead to a backlash against the store. Fortunately, Victoria’s Secret did positively respond to the incident. They took action against the employee and posted a public apology to Kimberly and anyone else affected.
The company is to be commended for a swift and decisive response. If this were an isolated incident in America, it might not be such a big thing. The fact is, however, that events like this happen every day and have been for a very long time. The only thing that has changed is the easy access to being able to record video when such things happen. The issue will be settled when black people no longer need to make such videos.
