For nearly two weeks Rachel Maddow has been missing in action leaving some rather large shoes to fill at MSNBC. Her absence has been especially palpable with relentless wave after wave of breaking news and leaks coming out of the Trump administration. Now she finally makes her way back to the newsroom and right off the bat has some rather big news to deliver.
Now many of you may recall the groundbreaking report from The New York Times that intimated details of Comey’s memos from meetings with Trump. Namely the detail that Trump was trying to get Comey to end the FBI investigation into possible collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign.
Well, as it turns out, Comey wasn’t the only person Trump approached about the investigation. Just in time for Rachel Maddow’s return to the screen news breaks that Trump had also asked Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats to intervene with then Director of the FBI James Comey over the Russia investigation.
According to The Washington Post report:
“The events involving Coats show the president went further than just asking intelligence officials to deny publicly the existence of any evidence showing collusion during the 2016 election, as The Washington Post reported in May. The interaction with Coats indicates that Trump aimed to enlist top officials to have Comey curtail the bureau’s probe.”
A spokesperson for the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, Brian P. Hale, had this to say on Coats behalf: “Director Coats does not discuss his private conversations with the President. However, he has never felt pressured by the President or anyone else in the Administration to influence any intelligence matters or ongoing investigations.”
So there is the standard denial from Coats as is to be expected with these matters and of course there is always more to the story. Watch Rachel Maddow bring it all together for you in the clip below.
