With the country still in turmoil after the violent events in Charlottesville this weekend, President Trump is going forward with his plans to hold a campaign rally (yes, he’s campaigning not even a year into his 4 year term) in Phoenix, Arizona, on August 22nd.
The mayor of Phoenix, however, is not having it: Democratic mayor, Greg Stanton, released a statement Wednesday evening, scolding Trump for holding a rally when the nation is still in pain, reeling from a domestic terror attack which killed one and injured 19 others.
The full statement reads as follows:
“I am disappointed that President Trump has chosen to hold a campaign rally as our nation is still healing from the tragic events in Charlottesville. If President Trump is coming to Phoenix to announce a pardon for former Sheriff Joe Arpaio, then it will be clear that his true intent is to enflame emotions and further divide our nation. It is my hope that more sound judgment prevails and that he delays his visit.
With regard to use of the Phoenix Convention Center for the rally: This is a public facility and open to anyone to rent – and that includes the Trump campaign. Our Constitution protects the right to free speech, even for those we disagree with or those who don’t represent the values we hold dear as a community.
In preparation for this event, my focus and that of the Phoenix Police Department is on keeping everyone – those attending the rally, those expressing their First Amendment rights outside and the general public – safe.”
It is notable that Mayor Stanton also chose to address the rumors that Trump is considering pardoning former Sheriff Joe Arpaio – who has been begging online for financial help since he got convicted of contempt of court – saying that if he does this, it will further divide the nation.
This sort of puts Trump in a conundrum if he really wants to pardon Arpaio, but it truly seems like he doesn’t actually care: it is all about political points with his shrinking base. Political points that he is willing to score even though, as Mayor Stanton pointed out, they will further divide and wound the nation.
