Business leaders know how to solve problems, Michael Bloomberg told a packed stadium at the DNC on Wednesday. That’s why the businessman turned NYC mayor turned #GunSense advocate says he often urges his fellow entrepreneurs to go into politics.
But not Donald Trump.
Michael Bloomberg declares that the GOP’s shady, protean, Vladimir Putin-loving would-be autocrat does not represent New York City’s business community.
“Most of us who have our names on the door know we are only as good as our word. But not Donald Trump.”
Michael Bloomberg goes on to lambaste Donald Trump’s many broken promises, bankruptcies, business failures, and unpaid contracts.
“Trump says he wants to run the nation like he runs his business? God help us!”
Amid loud and sustained applause, Michael Bloomberg then delivers another winning one-liner.
“I’m a New Yorker and I know a con when I see one.”
Michael Bloomberg: “Donald Trump says he wants to put Americans back to work. But he games the US visa system.”
But here’s where things get really interesting. Michael Bloomberg drops a bunch of well-known examples of Donald Trump’s hypocrisies but adds something new to the mix. He accuses Donald Trump of requesting visas for low-paid, temporary workers, even as he stokes resentments against these very same workers.
“Trump says he’ll punish manufacturers who move to Mexico or China. But the clothes he makes are made overseas in low-wage factories. He says he wants to put Americans back to work. But he games the US visa system so he can hire temporary foreign workers at low wages. He says he wants to deport 11 million undocumented people. But he seems to have no problem in hiring them. What’d I miss here? Truth be told, the richest thing about Donald Trump is his hypocrisy.”
And that well-measured diatribe brought down the house. And then, many DNC-watchers noticed a news crawl at the bottom of the screen announcing that Donald Trump had requested 76 visas for foreign workers to cook food, serve tables and clean rooms at one of his resorts.
Donald Trump says he hates immigrants, but he sure loves hiring them on the cheap.
That’s right. Donald Trump really is gaming our immigration system by demanding visas for foreign workers. Theoretically, these H1B-visas allow companies to hire foreign workers for jobs requiring specialized skills that employers can’t find in the US. For example, we likely have a shortage of goat herders, Fugu fishermen, and yuca root masticators here in America.
But like so many US employers, Donald Trump is totally abusing that loophole. Many of the Donald’s most staunch fans didn’t want to believe anything like that. But George Takei swiftly cleared that up on Twitter.
Trump wants 76 visa waivers for his housekeepers, valets & cooks at his resort because he claims no Americans can fill the jobs. #Hypocrite

As it turns out, the resort Michael Bloomberg was referring to was Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club in Florida.

The Buzzfeed article reports:
The presidential candidate is seeking to bring in 78 more servers, housekeepers, and cooks for his Mar-a-Lago resort and nearby golf course. The controversial guest worker program allows employers to import foreign workers, but only when there are no Americans who want the jobs.
Like many business owners, Donald Trump exploits our guest worker program when it saves him money. regardless of whether it hurts the US workers he claims to champion.
Trump says he wants to put Americans back to work, but he games the U.S. visa system so he can hire temporary foreign workers at low wages. “
