Gen. Joseph Dunford, Chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, seemed to make it clear that at this point, Trump’s transgender military ban is just political posturing, and he won’t play that game.
Trump’s tweets may be, in his own estimation, “official statements” but the Joint Chiefs of Staff have something to say about his latest tweet attacking transgender people who serve or wish to serve in our military. They may not be able to continue to defy this politically motivated grandstanding by Trump, when and if the change is done through the proper channels. But for now, the message is clear, all human beings are still to be respected in our military.
Transgender military ban? Not so fast.
Dunford and the Joint Chiefs of Staff from other branches of the military say there are no policy changes coming from Trump’s tweet yet, if ever. The US Military will continue to treat all who serve with respect until they are forced to accept the “Commander in Chief’s” political play. That is their legal and ethical defiance.
Here’s what POLITICO has to say about the transgender military ban:
Marine Gen. Joe Dunford also wrote in the message, which was sent to the chiefs of the military branches and senior enlisted leaders, that the military will continue to “treat all of our personnel with respect.”
“I know there are questions about yesterday’s announcement on the transgender policy by the President,” Dunford wrote in the internal communication, a copy of which was provided to POLITICO. “There will be no modifications to the current policy until the President’s direction has been received by the Secretary of Defense and the Secretary has issued implementation guidance.”
The Joint Chiefs are not a political body, and this doesn’t mean that they will become insubordinate over the transgender military ban. But it does mean that until they are legally bound to follow through with Trump’s disgusting segregation order, they won’t. They have a mission to accomplish and this hateful distraction just is not going to get their attention until they have been forced to deal with it. Hopefully, by that time, Trump’s tweet will have gone the way of most of his promises, and the Dodo.
