How Many Deaths Will It Take For Republicans To Admit Climate Change Is Real?

The body count is adding up in Louisiana, where record rainfall and catastrophic flooding has displaced more than 20,000 people and taken at least 6 lives. Science-denying Republicans generally chalk up weather disasters to freak accidents, or God punishing gay people. But the rest of us know better. Climate change is not only real, it’s already proving that it has the power to kill on a grand scale.

There is a limit to how much pollution humans can dump on the planet before it causes fundamental changes to weather patterns on a global scale. But pollution-loving Republicans won’t hear of it.

The corrupting influence of money in politics was on full display during 2016 GOP presidential debates. Back in March, then-candidate Sen. Marco Rubio said:

Well, sure, the climate is changing, and one of the reasons why the climate is changing is ’cause the climate has always been changing. There’s never been a time when the climate has not changed….But as far as a law that we can pass in Washington to change the weather, there’s no such thing…

Perhaps the real reason Sen. Rubio claims there is ‘no such thing’ as a law to reduce climate changing air pollution is because he’s being paid to say that, whether it’s true or not. Like so many other Republicans defending carbon emissions, Sen. Marco Rubio has taken hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from Big Polluters like the Koch brothers, who make money from poisoning the atmosphere.

Sen. Rubio is not alone. Among all the 2016 presidential candidates, Republicans took more money from the fossil fuel industry than any other candidates.

While Republicans continue to sell the economic benefits of air pollution to uninformed voters, the climate on our planet continues to change. And as it does, more extreme weather events will continue to destroy more lives.

It seems no number of deaths will ever be enough to convince a science-denying Republican that life is worth more than campaign money from Big Oil.
