At a campaign stop in Monessen, Pennsylvania, Donald Trump, playing on his nationalistic campaign slogan, gave a speech at a local aluminum plant, announcing a plan to “Make America Wealthy Again,” accompanied by a claim of sympathy for the American worker, all the while standing in front of reams of scrap aluminum and crushed soda cans.
“The legacy of Pennsylvania steelworkers lives in the bridges, railways and skyscrapers that make up our great American landscape. But our workers’ loyalty was repaid you know it better than anybody with betrayal. Our politicians have aggressively pursued a policy of globalization – moving our jobs, our wealth and our factories to Mexico and overseas.”
Donald Trump then lamented that the betrayal of workers in the form of globalization on the part of the “financial elite” made them very wealthy.
“I used to be one of them. Hate to say it.”
However, for all of Trump’s vapid lip service to the American worker, the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada employs many immigrants from Mexico and Central America, paying them three dollars less per hour than unionized workers in the same capacities. Additionally, despite these workers having as much as $132 deducted from their biweekly paychecks to cover health insurance payments, the insurance policies are not comprehensive, particularly in that they do not cover overnight hospital visits.
Even more appalling, a report from USA Today published on June 9, 2016 revealed that Donald Trump has refused to pay numerous contractors and hourly workers for services rendered. In fact, one cabinet maker, Edward Friel Jr., has been owed over $80,000 for a bill dating from the 1980s, which comes to just under $200,000 in todays money. Though Trump’s rationale for denying payment was that he found the work substandard despite the fact that the general contractor at the site gave it the thumbs-up, as a result of being stiffed, the Edward J. Friel company went bankrupt.
All things considered, for all of Donald Trump’s noble, idealistic sentiment, once again he is only standing for the things he believes people will fall for.
