Let’s clear the air here just a little bit, shall we? Seriously, it has been getting a tad bit on the batshit crazy side of the aisle since the Supreme Court’s recent ruling that both the Afordable Care Act and Marriage Equality are Constitutional and therefore 100% legal in the United States. Don’t get me wrong though, if anyone truly understands what it is like to be an extremist, it’s definitely this Liberal. I don’t think that I would be half the political activist that I am if I wasn’t such an extreme leftist. I also get Christianity — well, at least I do in theory. What I don’t get, however, is Christian extremism! Just to clarify a bit, if you are opposed to love despite whom is expressing that love and how they choose to do so, then you my friend might be a Christian extremist, at least in my professional opinion you might be one. Although, since this is just my opinion of what a Right Wing Christian Extremist actually is, there is no need for anyone to take any offense from my assertions, because I am simply a freelance writer/activist trying to make a name for himself, no one really gives a damn what I have to say anyway.
Now before we begin with the subsequent lesson in what the Bible actually says as opposed to how the mentally imbalanced and psychologically impaired Christian extremists choose to interpret it as “God given” and “inerrant” meaning. I am a very proud father of a beautiful baby girl and equally as proud of a step dad to my Fiance’s four children. I am in a heterosexual relationship with the love of my life and could not imagine my life as ever being too much different anytime in the future than it is currently. I still see nothing wrong with love, whether it be platonic, intimate, parental, heterosexual or homosexual, unconditional, tough love, etc. Love, in my opinion is the most basic, most fundamental character trait which humans are capable of expressing. I do not identify myself as a member of any religious body, which makes me neither an atheist nor atheism’s confused cousin — agnostic, but rather — free spirited, as I like to reffer to myself. I wholeheartedly believe in a creative and collective intelligence in our universe and to make things simple I refer to this entity as “God.” The best way I have ever heard a description of this “God” is that “God” is love, which I ironically read straight from the Bible.
For those of you who may not know, the Bible is a collection of 66 books written by approximately 40 different people in three languages, over three separate continents, during a time span of nearly 1600 years and it is the #1 best selling book sold worldwide to date. It serves as the sacred text for two of the world’s three major religions: Judaism and Christianity.
According to the basic tenants of Christianity, the Bible is both passed down to mankind directly from God and also is “inerrant” (meaning without error). I would like to focus on the second half of that statement for the purposes of this article. If the Bible is without error than that leads one to believe that every letter, which forms every word, on every page in this book should be taken at face value, correct?
There are 20 passages in the Bible which biggoted Christian extremists commonly misinterpret and subsequently use as weapons for condemning homosexuals. There are also 2 passages which one could surely apply to this subject which they disregard every time, but we’ll get to those a little later. Here is a list of 9 of the most commonly used of these overly propagated, misinterpreted, myths. I have compiled this list frankly because I am simply sick and tired of the uproar that homosexuality goes against anyone’s religious beliefs, especially supposed followers of Jesus Christ.
Let’s get right into some Bible study, shall we.
1) Genesis 2: 21-25
“21 So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. 23 The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman, ‘ for she was taken out of man.” 24 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh. 25 The man and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.”
Please someone, anyone, show me where this passage in the story of creation ever once condemns homosexuality? It simply does not, because remember that this was written “without error.”
2). Deuteronomy 23:17
“17 There shall be no whore of the daughters of Israel, nor a sodomite of the sons of Israel.”
I’m sure that when Christian extremists see the word “sodomite” it conjures up all kinds of preconceived nonsensical definitions of homosexual sex between two men, however this is about the furthermost thing from the actual meaning of the word which is simply “one who engages in the act of sodomy (which in the context it was written in literally means a man who forcibly has intercourse with another man for the sole purpose of humiliation). Homosexual sex is not a hate crime as far as I know and is more closely related to love, intimacy and companionship.
3). Jude 1: 6-7
“And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their proper dwelling—these he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day. 7 In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire.”
Again while these two passages are definitely referring to sex, I cannot for the life of me see how anyone can come to the distorted conclusion that they in any way condemn homosexuality. The first half of this is clearly telling us not to have sex outside of our own species, particularly with angels and the second half refer to the famous cities of Sodom and Gomorrah which are commonly misconstrued as to be places where homosexuality was not only openly practiced, but also somewhat celebrated. This is also 100% false and a quick glance through the Bible will show that if nothing else, Sodom and Gomorrah were centered around pagan ritualistic sex, not homosexuality.
4) 1 Corinthians 6:9-10
“9 Do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived! Fornicators, idolaters, adulterers, male prostitutes, sodomites, 10 thieves, the greedy, drunkards, revilers, robbers—none of these will inherit the kingdom of God.”
We have already established the definition of a Sodomite, so hopefully we can move right along to number five?
5). Romans 1:26-28
26 For this reason God gave them up to degrading passions. Their women exchanged natural intercourse for unnatural, 27 and in the same way also the men, giving up natural intercourse with women, were consumed with passion for one another. Men committed shameless acts with men and received in their own persons the due penalty for their error. 28 And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind and to things that should not be done.
This excerpt is a bit more tricky, but the basic consensus amidst theologians is that this verse is referring to male prostitutes who during this day and age were 9 times out of ten children and therefore was condemning pedophilia and not consensual sex between two willing male adults.
6). Leviticus 18:22,
“You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination.”1
7). Leviticus 20:13,
“If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act; they shall surely be put to death. Their bloodguiltness is upon them.” I am lumping these two together because if you follow anything I’m Leviticus, you have to either be one of the dumbest creatures on the planet, or Ted Cruz…….wait did I just say the same thing twice?
8). Genesis 1:28
” God blessed them; and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
Once again, I will ask you to please point out to me where this verse condemns the consensual sexual engagements of either two consenting men or women? Bet you cannot, though
9). Romans 1:32
32 and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them.
Chances are if you are of the batshit crazy variety of Right Wing Christian Extremists, you are either wondering how you will ever find the time to clean up the mess around you as a result of your feeble brain being overloaded with factual information at a level which you were never properly wired correctly enough to allow to happen Or you are shaking somewhat uncontrollably due to all of your pent up bigoted anger over the sheer notion that you no longer have the ignorant excuse if not knowing, and can no longer simply play stupid when people start to ask questions which you will now and forevermore know the answers to.
Just because you do not accept these facts as being truths, does not make them any more or less factual. So please, the next time which you feel it is necessary to segregate someone or ostracize that person or be a bully, simply based on whom they choose to love, consider who is actually the one perpetrating evil! I suppose what I am trying to get at is that the next time that one of you whack job’s tries to blame your refusal to do anything which involves the LGBT community, you can no longer use Christianity or your “sacred text” as a viable excuse for such an experience. The following two passages from this “sacred text,” you so regularly use as a weapon, are completely askew from how you say the Bible feels in regards to homosexuality – may I now turn your attention to Luke 17: 34 & 35
