On the campaign trail, Donald Trump assured his fans he’d ‘repeal and replace’ Obamacare with something better. Now CNN’s Anderson Cooper’s holding him to his broken promises.
While performing for howling crowds, Donald Trump delivered the message voters fed up with stagnant wages and budget cuts craved. He promised to bring their jobs back and protect their Social Security and their Medicare. Like Bernie Sanders’ followers, they want a fairer economy and a strong social safety net. But unlike the Berners, Trump voters only want those things for “deserving” folks like them.
Over and over again, he claimed he’s not like the other Republicans. In a crowded field of candidates, he alone understood that many of these voters rely on Obamacare but wish they had better coverage and lower premiums and deductible. Others vowed to repeal the ACA, but only Donald Trump kept promising to repeal and replace it with something better.
On Tuesday night, Anderson Cooper led in with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s (R-Ky.) failed repeal and replace attempt. Never mind that the bill keeps failing because some Republicans don’t want to screw their own constituents while hard-liners want to screw them more. Now McConnell’s going to try to ram through a repeal with no replacement.
Donald Trump’s reaction? Anderson Cooper queues up the video with the GOP’s sulking president denying all responsibility.
“We’re not gonna own it, I’m not gonna own it, I can tell ya the Republicans are not gonna own it. We’ll let Obamacare fail and then the Democrats are gonna come to us…”
The disgusted 360 host then launches into a scathing diatribe about Trump’s refusal to take any responsibility whatsoever.
“It’s not exactly Harry Truman’s ‘the buck stops here’ or John F. Kennedy’s wry observation as he accepted responsibility for the failed Bay of Pigs operation and said, ‘victory has a hundred fathers and defeat is an orphan.’It’s not even Otter’s words of tough love to his Delta House frat brother Flounder, ‘you f’ed up, you trusted us.'”
No. The leader of the free world can’t even muster up the Animal House defense. Anderson Cooper then points out:
“It’s as if the president has forgotten one of his most frequently repeated promises throughout the election.”
He then rolls video footage with Donald Trump vowing over and over again to “Repeal and replace it.” “Repeal and replace.” Repeal and replace.” In a packed stadium, the then-candidate declared:
“Obamacare. We’re gonna repeal it, we’re gonna replace it, we’re gonna get something new. [Cheers] Repeal it, replace it, we’re gonna get something great!”
At another event he blood thirstily vowed to kill Obamacare, and then replace it.
“We’re gonna kill it. Let it die. Let it die. And we’re gonna come up with something much, much better.”
And here’s the part where Trump says he can deliver “great healthcare” for way less money.
“You’re going to have such great healthcare at a tiny fraction of the cost. And it’s gonna be so easy.”
After the election, he even went on CBS’ 60 Minutes and told Leslie Stahl we don’t have to worry about being left without access to healthcare.
“We’re not going to do it[the repeal and replace] simultaneously, it’ll be just fine. We’re not gonna have like a two day period, we’re not gonna have a two-year period where there’s nothing. It will be repealed and replaced, and we’ll know. And it’ll be great healthcare for much less money.”
And now Donald Trump’s totally on board with repealing the ACA and not replacing it. So much for his promises. Who cares about all the people who will get sick and die. Anderson Cooper points out:
“That’s a big change from the campaign. Back then he took great pains to reassure those who might depend on Obamacare provisions they would not be left out in the cold.”
In closing, he reminded us of a tweet from Donald Trump back in 2013.
Anderson Cooper calls out Donald Trump on breaking his campaign promise: “It’s as if Trump has forgotten.”
