It seems that a year’s worth of news was crammed into last week, the week that Trump took it upon himself to fire the man investigating him, James Comey, under the pretense of protecting the virtue of Hillary Clinton and her emails. So a short break seems in order amid all the turmoil and democracy-eroding chaos, doesn’t it now? Enter Randy Rainbow and his latest musical, “‘The Russian Connection.”
Randy Rainbow is the “politically aware show queen, comedian, actor, Internet Sensation and @BroadwayWorld TV Personality” who has close to 100 videos now on Youtube dating back 8 years. Randy Rainbow is actually his real name. He really seems to have found his musical voice over the years, with his most-watched video, “Braggadocious,” about the first Presidential debate between Trump and Clinton at over 30 million views.
In an interview with Towleroad, he explained that the ideas for his videos are all his own:
“It’s just me in my studio apartment with a green screen taking up my entire living room. It’s pretty absurd if you saw it in person. I’m hoping I’m moving into some fancier territory where I can have a bigger space and maybe some help.”
His creative all-nighters result in videos that are often cathartic and even healing for viewers:
“In a weird way, it’s cathartic. I think there’s a lot of levels to it, because I’m a gay guy, and I’m someone who might be marginalized by these giants sort of. So to watch me sort of insert myself and be a smartass to them, I think, is not only humorous but cathartic for people.”
As Andy Lassner, executive producer for the Ellen show said, “These videos never disappoint. Ever.”

In his latest video, “The Russian Connection,” we find a cranky Trump in a sit-down interview with Randy to talk about the firing of James Comey and the “shifting narrative” from Trump and his cronies about the matter. The choice of “The Rainbow Connection” from the Muppet Movie’s Kermit the Frog is, of course, a natural fit for Rainbow, and the video really does feel like a relief, with appearances and mentions of “Sarah Huckleberry Sandbag,” Rex Tillerson, Sean Spicer, Mike Pence, Kellyanne Conway, and numerous green Vladimir Putins.
You say ‘Showboatin’
But that’s just scapegoatin’
I think you’re staging a coup.
One day they’ll find it,
The Russian Connection,
The hustlers, the cheaters, and you.
Enjoy the video below, and thanks to Randy for making us laugh at a time when we are also so horrified:
