When we cover television events here at American News X, sometimes the clips are just funny. Sometimes, they are funny with a serious point. This one (see clip below…) certainly falls into the latter. Jon Stewart made a surprise appearance on Stephen Colbert’s late night show on CBS last night. He came to the stage dressed in what he thought was the “new style” that is set for the country. After all, as Stewart noted, the President sets the fashion trends for the country. So, fittingly he came out in a suit with a really long red tie and a dead animal on his head.
After some banter between Stewart and the host, Stewart revealed that he had three new executive orders that we will see coming from the White House.
The first was that China (or “Ghina”) will immediately send us their wall, cause we need one. BOOM! Done.
The second was that America would finally have an official language. Colbert remarked that of course, it must be English. But no, it wasn’t English. According to Stewart’s executive order, the official new language is bullshit. Furthermore, it will be declared that the new language must not only be spoken at work but also at home — because immersion is the only way to become truly fluent.
Then it came to Trump’s final new executive order. Stewart read (reminding the audience these are Trump’s words) that he (Trump) is exhausting. He iterated that it had only been 11 days — 11 f*cking days.
“The presidency is supposed to age the president, not the public!” The reason Trump was so “exhausting,” he continued, is that “every instinct and fiber of my pathological self-regard calls me to abuse of power.”
“I, Donald J. Trump, am exhausting because it is going to take relentless stamina, vigilance, and every institutional check and balance this great country can muster to keep me, Donald J. Trump, from going full Palpatine, with the lightning coming out of the fingertips and the ‘fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate.’ We have never faced this before—purposeful, vindictive chaos.”
Stewart continued, “But perhaps therein lies the saving grace of I, Donald J. Trump’s presidency. No one action will be adequate. All action will be necessary. And if we do not allow Donald Trump to exhaust our fight and somehow come through this presidency calamity-less, and constitutionally partially intact, then I, Donald J. Trump, will have demonstrated the greatness of America, just not the way I thought I was gonna.”
With that “mic drop” moment, Stewart exited the stage to raucous applause. Through comedy, he had made his points. The last and greatest of which was actually an acknowledgment of the effective activism that people have risen to since the election, and especially since the inauguration. How effective, you ask? Well, social media has been circulating a list of 10 things activism and not giving in to Trump “exhausting” them has caused since the inauguration;
1. The Federal hiring freeze is reversed for VA (Veteran Affairs).
2. Court order Partial stay of the immigration ban for those with valid visas.
3. Green card holders can get back in this country.
4. Uber pledges $3M and immigration lawyers for its drivers after #DeleteUber trends on Twitter.
5. Obamacare (Affordable Care Act) enrollment ads are still going to air.
6. The ACLU raised 24M over the weekend (normally 3-4Mil/year).
7. HHS, EPA, USDA gag order lifted.
8. EPA climate data no longer scrubbed from their website.
9. More people of different career/religious/economic/race backgrounds are considering running for political office than ever before.
10. MOST importantly, since we live in a participatory democracy, the people are engaged.
Stewart knows though that activist burnout is a “thing.” His message to the #resist movement was that vigilance is the only way. Trump is exhausting. The people who are against the Trump agenda must keep the pressure up. It has only been 11 days and we are in for four years of resistance. The battle will not be easy for activists, but the battle is necessary and must be won, as we have never seen anything like this in this country. As last night’s SCOTUS nomination showed, the right wing and conservative GOP factions are uniting, that will be necessary on the left as well if their causes are to have any chance of surviving the Trump Presidency.
