What is it With Bigots and Skittles?

The rancid acorn doesn't fall far from the tree.

Did you hear about the Donald’s mini-me Skittles Skandal? The spoiled, never-worked-a-day-in-his-life-snot-nosed-elephant-killing-punk son of the Ochre Ogre Tweeted out an outrageous and blatantly false meme Monday afternoon.

To the progressive brain, the situation in Syria is a humanitarian crisis. An exodus of downtrodden men, women and children, with nothing to lose and the very lives of their children to gain, trying to escape rape, barrel bombs, starvation, ISIS, a power play between dozens of warring factions including us and Putin, begging the world for shelter. What was it that copper-clad gal said? Oh yeah:

“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me. I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

To the conservative brain, Syrian refugees are viewed as 14M potential Trojan horses, because they’re… well, they’re different. They’re from someplace where they eat weird food and speak Arabic. They’ve got funny names, dark skin, and they worship something other than one of the pre-approved religions. DANGER!

Trump Sr. shares his idiot son’s views. A few months ago, following an attempted terrorist attack, he said something along these lines (paraphrasing from memory) “The people in these communities, they knew about it. Are you going to tell me these guys planned all this and nobody knew about it? Come on. Why aren’t they coming forward and turning them in to the police? They could have prevented this, but they chose not to.”

First of all, there’s no evidence that that’s true. As usual, whenever Trump says something on a day that ends with “Y,” he’s pulling it out of his ass. But for the sake of argument, let’s entertain his point.

How many red, white and blue Americans out there could have come forward to prevent the spate of bombings, arson and murder associated with Planned Parenthood clinics? Are you honestly going to tell us that out of the more than 200 acts of religious terrorism carried out against women’s healthcare facilities that nobody, other than the terrorists themselves knew about their plans in advance? Not one of these thugs ever confided with his pastor or priest before carrying out his crime? Or with his bowling buddies or his wife? NEVER? That’s a pretty big pill to swallow, counselor.

It’s very odd. Most conservatives who speak of the right to life, many of whom tout themselves as the guardians of the Constitution—particularly the 1st Amendment protections of speech and worship—don’t really give a fat rat’s ass about the lives of 14M Syrian refugees, nor are they terribly concerned about defending any form of worship other than their own.

President Obama wants to provide 110,000 Syrian refugees American citizenship over the next year. That’s 110,000 too many for people like Donald Trump Jr. and the fearful rodents who make up his daddy’s racist, sexist political party.

Progressivism stands for everyone. Conservatism doesn’t. It doesn’t set preconditions. A veritable “religious test” has been proposed by the leader of their party, which flies in the face of their claims of loving Liberty and defending the Constitution.

Emma Lazarus was a progressive. That’s what inspired her to write those words that are emblazoned on the Statue of Liberty today. Words that used to mean something to all Americans. They no longer do. Ironically enough, they’re now utterly ignored by the political entity once known as the Party of Lincoln.
