How Trump’s Twitter-Tantrums Could Lead To Another Government Shutdown

Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi

As proof that there are consequences for Trump’s constant Twitter-tantrums, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) responded to one of his latest Tweets by backing out of a Tuesday meeting with Trump to discuss last-minute support for his the Republican tax reform plans.

CNN Senior White House Correspondent, Jeff Zeleny, Tweeted about ‘Chuck and Nancy’s’ standoff with Trump:

Trump’s Tuesday morning compulsive Tweet:

Meeting with “Chuck and Nancy” today about keeping government open and working. Problem is they want illegal immigrants flooding into our Country unchecked, are weak on Crime and want to substantially RAISE Taxes. I don’t see a deal!

Schumer and Pelosi didn’t take kindly to Trump’s threat of a government shutdown or his other baseless claims. Trump has already threatened a shutdown twice this year.

The Washington Post reported that the two Democratic leaders snubbed Trump:

In response, Schumer and Pelosi said that “rather than going to the White House for a show meeting that won’t result in an agreement,” they wanted to meet alone with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.).

“If the president, who already said earlier this year that ‘our country needs a good shutdown,’ isn’t interested in addressing the difficult year-end agenda, we’ll work with those Republicans who are,” they said.

Meeting with Ryan may prove just as useless though.

In late October Speaker Paul Ryan had indicated in private comments to House conservatives that he would include DACA legislation in the end of the year spending bill.

Then by early November, his tune abruptly changed.

“It should be considered separately on its own merits,” Ryan told reporters on November 9th. Republicans wanted their own deal, trading money for Trump’s border wall idea in exchange for extending the DACA program. It seems likely that funding for Trump’s border wall could figure prominently in the standoff today.

Rather than wanting “illegal immigrants flooding into our Country unchecked,” as Trump’s dramatization implies, Schumer and Pelosi do want to ensure that the fates of roughly 800,000 DACA recipients are not left hanging in the breeze by the callous Republicans. That’s why they insist on including an immigration plan in the spending bill.

Trump abruptly ended the programs for young undocumented immigrants in September, willing to gamble their lives on the off-chance that the Republicans in Congress will prevent mass deportations for the “dreamers” that could begin in March.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders called for Pelosi and Schumer to “put aside their pettiness, stop the political grandstanding, show up and get to work. These issues are too important.”

Apparently, the issues of hundreds of thousands of young immigrants are not counted as important to Sanders. Meanwhile, Trump’s Tweets are unparalleled for pettiness direct on tap every day from the White House.

Congressman Ted Lieu noted that Trump’s Tweets have real-life consequences.

Another main issue of importance to Trump, other than his absurd wall, appears to be inflating the military budget from $549 billion to more than $600 billion.

Failure to reach an agreement could result in a shutdown before the midterms next year, which would be damaging for the country and would certainly influence the outcome of the elections.
