Remember all during the campaign, when confronted with various issues that Trump had said inflammatory or racist things about — their reply was that they “didn’t take him literally.” Those involved and close to the campaign even played up that sentiment — even after the election. Well — surprise … Today, Trump went out in front of the cameras and told everyone that he is just doing exactly what he said he would do. One look at his actions would tell you the same thing. For example, he has attempted to ban Muslims from coming to our country in a thinly veiled attempt that the courts have blocked. He is seemingly plowing ahead with his wall building, despite the cost estimates far exceeding what he said in the campaign and Mexico’s refusal to actually pay for it.
Specifically, he said;
“In each of these actions, I’m keeping my promises to the American people. These are campaign promises. Some people are so surprised that we are having strong borders. Well, that’s what I’ve been talking about for a year and a half.” He later added “I’m here following through on what I pledged to do. That’s all I’m doing.”
From there, Trump went back into “alternative fact” land. He began to talk about the election. How everyone said it was impossible to win. Not everyone said that, but the next line was the real whopper — “We got 306 (electoral votes). Because people came out and voted like they never seen before … I guess it was the biggest electoral college win since Ronald Reagan.”
Ok, two big lies there. First, “people coming out like never before” isn’t true. Voter turnout in the election was nothing special. And if we are just tallying raw numbers, Hillary Clinton got almost 3,000,000 more votes than he did. So, if “people came out like never before” they came out for Clinton.
Some might contend he meant that it was the biggest electoral win for a Republican since Reagan. There too, his account is wrong. George H.W. Bush got 426 in 1988.
Why lie on such an easily checkable fact? One can only guess. The fact is, however, Trump is lying here. Remember that, the guy who just told you to take him “literally” followed that statement by lying. Whether it is an ego thing, a psychological thing, or just sheer ignorance — it is still a lie. One cannot take someone literally when so much simply is not the truth. perhaps that has contributed to the mass chaos that has been his administration since he took office just under one month ago. A month that has seen his National Security Advisor forced out after the shortest tenure of anyone ever to hold that position (24 days).
Why was he booted? Apparently, it was for lying. Well, that was the story one day. The next day it was “fake news” and the media’s fault. On top of that, reports that Trump did nothing about General Michael Flynn’s dishonesty until his lies were reported in the media last Friday. Nor did he inform the person being lied to (Vice President Pence) and allowed him to go out before the American people and yes, lie.
this is the guy we are supposed to take literally?
