Trump’s commitment to reality appears to be as tenuous as his commitment to marriage. Ever since being sworn in January, 45 has done nothing but repeat the very right-wing lies and conspiracy theories that helped him get as far as he did in the first place.
Trump now appears to have made up receiving a phone call from Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto, in which the president claims was Nieto lauding his efforts at constructing the US-Mexican wall. According to CBS, Trump made these comments during a press appearance with new Chief of Staff John Kelly.
Here was Trump, via CBS:
“As you know, the border was a tremendous problem and they’re close to 80 percent stoppage. And even the president of Mexico called me — they said their southern border, very few people are coming because they know they’re not going to get through our border, which is the ultimate compliment.”
But the Mexican president said that such a call never happened.
In a statement released by the Mexican Foreign Ministry, Nieto “has not recently spoken to President Donald Trump over the telephone.”
“During the meeting, the two heads of State held last July 7th in Hamburg, Germany, the topic of migration was a topic of conversation approached by both. President Peña Nieto shared that repatriations of Mexican nationals from the United States had fallen 31% between January and June 2017 in comparison to the same timeframe in 2016,” the statement read.
If only Trump heard himself speak instead of his cronies telling him he’s great—then perhaps he would hear what the majority of Americans hear. What’s more, Trump seems not to care about how swift and easily his lies can be debunked. Perhaps this is because he doesn’t care and, much like a hateful right-wing radio host, speaks only to a small but very misguided and uneducated segment of the population.
