“What is done in darkness, will always come to light.” —Luke 8:17
Just after midnight on December 7th, 1941, the new teletype machine at the Japanese embassy in Washington D.C. began buzzing with a coded message which needed to be decoded and presented to Franklin Roosevelt by noon. But there was a problem: the staff at the Japanese embassy didn’t know how to type. They had to first get the coded message, input it into a purple machine and then type out the message. It didn’t really matter because the US Signal Corp was already deciphering the message as it came into the war department. Secretary Stimson awaited the report, clueless to what was happening at Pearl Harbor.
Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto was sitting on his carrier Akagi when he was told that the Japanese ultimatum had not been delivered by the designated time. Yamamoto was educated at Harvard and he knew the US like no other Japanese officer. He knew the peril he had just put Imperial Japan in. He said,
“I fear all we have done today is to awaken a great, sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve.”
Fast-forward to the present.
On March 16th, 2018, the President of the United States, in an act of pure petty vindictiveness, fired 21-year FBI veteran Andrew McCabe… Just two days before he was due to retire with his full pension. He fired his own Secretary of State the day before on Twitter no less. The State Department usually has 6 permanent undersecretaries. Trump told the world that he had talked to Rex Tillerson for a long time about him leaving. The only permanent undersecretary, Steve Goldstein, put out a statement after Tillerson was unceremoniously fired via Twitter.
“He will miss his colleagues at the Department of State and the foreign ministers he has worked with throughout the world. The secretary did not speak to the president and is unaware of the reason, but he is grateful for the opportunity to serve, and still believes strongly that public service is a noble calling.”
Donald Trump lied about speaking to Tillerson before he fired him. Two hours after Goldstein put out that comment to the media, Trump fired the last of the six permanent undersecretaries. He had bragged just the night before about lying to Justin Trudeau about a trade deficit that he concocted entirely. The next day, he sent out Sarah Sanders to repeat the lie, which she did, shamelessly.
It’s important to remember that Tillerson was fired the day after he gave his first condemnation of Russia for killing and attempting to kill Russian expatriates in a NATO country. One important part of the NATO treaty is that if any member state is attacked, all other members are required to respond. Putin has done everything possible to destroy NATO. Trump somehow believes that NATO is something the United States pays for. This is absurd but such is the extent of his ignorance.
National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster also joined the chorus of condemnations of this Russian operation inside the United Kingdom. The next day, Trump told staff that McMaster would be replaced.
Putin has attacked the United States several times in the last 2 years that we know of. He ordered the break-in at the DNC in order to help Trump win. He ordered his mercenaries in Syria to attack Americans holding an oil field; which thankfully, the NSA intercepted these messages and American special forces were waiting on them when they got to their location. They killed hundreds of them. No Americans were hurt. Finally, the Department of Homeland security informed us that Russian electronic hackers had gotten access to our nuclear power plants and our power grid and could shut it down at will.
Putin ordered FSB agents to use a nerve gas to kill a former Russian spy and his daughter. Another former spy was strangled to death in England. These are all acts of war.
The GOP is now anti-American.
In under a year, the Republican party has gone from an anti-Russian pro-FBI stalwart to a pro-Russian anti-FBI party of zealots. Trump’s gas-lighting of half the country into something that would make Ronald Reagan sick is now complete.
Evangelicals no longer care about adultery. They don’t care about abortion unless it’s when they are trying to get their mistresses to have one. They see the families of undocumented people being ripped apart and they say nothing. Greed, gluttony, sloth, wrath, avarice, pride and lust no longer mean anything to them. They sold their souls for power and look what it’s wrought.
Trump loves the chaos and has said so because he doesn’t know anything else. He has gone after our allies, the CIA, the NSA, the FBI, Alec Baldwin, Saturday Night Live, President Obama, Hillary, his own Attorney General, Gold Star Families, John McCain, Federal Judges, Adam Schiff, Lil Rocket Man, and many others.
One constant amid this never-ending chaos is that Trump has not once criticized or threatened Russia or Putin. The commission he promised to look into Russian meddling in our election never happened. The sanctions Congress passed almost unanimously have yet to be implemented by Trump. 4 star general Barry McCaffrey said something stunning Thursday.
“Reluctantly I have concluded that President Trump is a serious threat to US national security. He is refusing to protect vital US interests from active Russian attacks. It is apparent that he is for some unknown reason under the sway of Mr. Putin.”
The willingness of half our country to ignore what is staring them in the face is a result of the gas-lighting and 20+ years of propaganda brainwashing them. Why would Republicans believe that Trump is still under audit by the IRS and believe such a claim while he is clearly hiding his financial records? If he ran for president for altruistic reasons, why has he refused to divest himself of his many conflicts of interest and also refuse to release his taxes unless he has something to hide?
This week Robert Mueller sent subpoenas to the Trump organization specifically for anything regarding Russia. If the White House were cooperating with the special counsel, there would be no need for a subpoena. Clearly, Mueller has found evidence of a crime. Everyone he has convicted thus far from Trump’s campaign either lied about their ties to Russia or were outright Russian assets.
Everywhere we turn there are more and more Russians involved with Trump. Russian state TV is crowing about Trump being “theirs.” He gave Russians signal-code level intelligence from the Israelis to the Russians inside the Oval Office. Jared Kushner tried to set up a back channel in New York specifically to consult with Russia without the NSC or State Department being involved. Is this all just some fantastical coincidence? If we apply Occam’s Razor to all of this, there is but one conclusion that anyone can reach.
Donald Trump is a Russian asset.
If it walks like a Russian asset, talks like a Russian asset, it’s a Russian asset.
In their zeal to win power, Republicans have gotten into bed with the Russians because Hillary was their enemy too and all they cared about was winning at any price. Trump fired an acting FBI director specifically to obstruct an inquiry into Russian involvement with the Trump campaign. Not only did he not pay him the respect of firing him in person, he fired him while he was in California so he had to learn of it on television. In an act of petty vindictiveness the likes of which the world has never seen, Trump fired Andy McCabe just two days before his retirement.
Andrew McCabe was revered by the rank and file of the FBI. This kind of gloating is not only decidedly unpresidential, it’s unAmerican. We don’t treat our public servants like this out of some misguided political retribution, until now. Is this something any president would do to someone who has dedicated their life to public service only to at the last minute, be slandered so egregiously by a man who should be singing his praises for his service to our nation?
How far is too far? How much further must we dig to lower the bar for the unconscionable behavior of this debased president who treats our government like it’s his own private fiefdom? Undermining our institutions and democracy is something Putin has wanted to do for decades. He has found spectacular success with the complicit Republicans who these many treasons go unchecked. You can do something about that in November.
Until then, you can be certain that Trump has filled the FBI with the most terrible resolve.
