Texas Governor Pushes Ahead With Another Bathroom Bill – Business Leaders Fight Back

Governor of Texas, Greg Abbott and Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick

Texas Governor Greg Abbott, as well as Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, have decided to go ahead with their own version of North Carolina’s bathroom bill. This time, it’s called SB 6. Think of it as “Stupid Bully Bill 6,” and you get the idea.

Despite the evidence that North Carolina’s bathroom bill which also aimed to prevent transgender folk from using the restroom comfortably had disastrous consequences for the state’s economy and its reptilian then-governor, Texas is voluntarily getting in line for the same treatment.

In fact, Governor Abbott and Dan Patrick are banking that they won’t see economic repercussions in Texas. They aren’t worried about the NFL’s statement that they might choose not to host the Super Bowl in the state either. Texas Republicans must really want to keep a tiny minority from peeing comfortably. Priorities…and profound ignorance, as well as a real knack for not learning from history…

For the record, we do want to give proper respect to Texas House Speaker Joe Straus for breaking with his fellow Republicans to condemn Senate Bill 6.

“I think we should be very careful about doing something that can make Texas less competitive for investment, jobs and the highly skilled workforce needed to compete,” Straus told a Texas Association of Business conference in mid-January.

He received a standing ovation from the business association, which estimated SB 6 could cost Texas 185,000 jobs and $8.5 billion in economic losses.

Today, the Human Rights Campaign has released a statement that nearly 70 businesses join Chambers of Commerce in an official letter opposing Stupid Bully Bill 6. The Texas Association of Businesses organized the signing of this letter as part of its “Keep Texas Open for Business” project. The Association’s president, Chris Wallace, stated that “Texas could lose billions of dollars in GDP — a critical loss of revenue that would threaten the state’s ability to fund public education, transportation, and other essential state services.”

Stupid Bully Bill 6 would “force state agencies, municipalities, public schools and public universities to discriminate against transgender people,” according to the Human Rights Campaign.

The Human Rights Campaign provided a list of signatories for the letter, with many recognizable names:

Alamo Drafthouse, Albemarle, Amazon, AMD, American Airlines, American Society of Association Executives, Apple, Arconic, Atlassian, Ben & Jerry’s, Bishop Avenue Capital, Bracewell LLP, Capital Factory, Capital One, Cedar Park Chamber of Commerce, Celanese, Choice Hotels, Civitas Capital Group, CompTIA, CompX International, Dell Inc., Destination El Paso, Dow Chemical, eBay, Facebook, Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce, Google, Google Fiber, Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce, Greater El Paso Chamber of Commerce, GSD&M, Haynes & Boone, Hilton, HP, IBM, Indeed, Intel, InterContinental Hotels Group, Ketchum, Kronos Worldwide, La Quinta Inns & Suites, Marriott International, McShan Florist Inc., Microsoft, NL Industries, North San Antonio Chamber of Commerce, NXP, PayPal, Plano Chamber of Commerce, RetailMeNot, Round Rock Chamber, Salesforce, Samsung Austin Semiconductor, Sanders\Wingo, Silicon Labs, South Padre Island Chamber of Commerce, Strasburger & Price LLP, SXSW, TechNet, TEKVOX, Tenet Healthcare, Texas Association of Business, Thompson & Knight LLP, Under Armour, Unilever, United Airlines, VisitDallas, Xoxco, Inc.
