Neil deGrasse Tyson: ‘The Most Important Words I Have Ever Spoken’ (Video)

Neil deGrasse Tyson. Just his name can be enough to draw attention in the Scientific community, he is almost a folk-hero on the left. So, when he took to Facebook to share what he classifies as maybe the most important words he has ever spoken, it is definitely time to listen:

Dear Facebook Universe

I offer this four-minute video on “Science in America” containing what may be the most important words I have ever spoken.

As always, but especially these days, keep looking up.

—Neil deGrasse Tyson

Science is not a game, it is not yet another religion, it isn’t a musty tome or rigid dogma — it is a method. Science can be defined as, “the intellectual and practical activity encompassing the systematic study of the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment.” It grows, breathes almost. That doesn’t stop the conservative mindset from dismissing it out of hand because it doesn’t agree with what are actually musty tomes and religions.

Tyson talks about science in America, and it’s absolute integral importance in the political conversation here. But not just its presence. The absence, or denial, of scientific literacy, is damaging in more varied ways than we can imagine — such as when Mike Pence, our own VP said that we need to cast doubt on Evolution in our schools. Or, when Trump and others have called coal “clean.”

We are facing a crisis in our government, our Congress and White House are being run seemingly in direct conflict with scientific fact and without a hint of scientific literacy. (In some cases, there is doubt of literacy at all.) This means that the most important issues of our time, such as the human element of Climate Change, can not and will not be addressed properly. Women will continue to be treated as vessels to be filled with god-chosen life, not human beings with bodily autonomy and choice over their own reproduction. The planet will continue to be treated as a disposable unit created by a god who will return and destroy it to bring his people to heaven.
