Samantha Bee Destroys Myths About Sanctuary Cities

Full Frontal with Samantha Bee tackled the subject of Trump’s latest threats against sanctuary cities. On Wednesday, Trump signed an order to withhold federal funding to sanctuary cities.

Trump told Bill O’Reilly in an interview Sunday that he would consider defunding sanctuary cities like New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles, among many other cities that happen to contribute the most to America’s Gross Domestic Product.

“I don’t want to defund anybody. I want to give them the money they need to properly operate as a city or a state,” Trump told O’Reilly. “If they’re going to have sanctuary cities, we may have to do that. Certainly, that would be a weapon.”

Samantha’s segment on this latest weaponized attack on our country’s immigrants is a must-see. She brings her trademark biting humor, while addressing important facts about sanctuary cities.

“[…] While we were all admiring the President’s, ‘I can’t believe it’s not A Muslim Ban,‘ he also scribbled his John Hancock on this,’ Samantha said, referring to the order against sanctuary cities.

“Well he did say he’d run the country the same way he runs his business, ” Samantha said, while a news headline ran behind her about the D.C. contractors who claim that Trump owes them 3 million dollars.

Samantha went on to define sanctuary cities.

“So what are sanctuary cities? Are they where artists and the LGBTQ community seek sanctuary from the red states where they were born? Or are they magical urban nature sanctuaries where endangered animals live like people? Yes, they are and stop elephant spreading. They are also places where undocumented people don’t have to live like animals,” she said.

Samantha then addresses Fox News viewers, who may exclusively see biased stories that vilify sanctuary cities and undocumented immigrants as if they are all criminals and not entirely human. In fact, the cities are places where law enforcement will not always detain people or alert federal authorities when they become aware a person came into the country without inspection.

“If that sounds compassionate to you, congratulations, you haven’t been watching Fox News for the past five years,” said Samantha Bee.

It depends, of course, on the nature of the offense. Criminal actions will still be reported. However, statistics show that undocumented immigrants are less likely to commit serious crimes than native-born individuals. You would never know it by watching the hyperbole of Fox News or Donald Trump, who equate sanctuary cities with anarchy and extreme danger.

“Jesus guys, if you hate our anarchy so much, why don’t you pack up your [Fox News] studio and f*ck off to some safe square state, where you have to share the town prostitutes. Good luck getting a falafel at 3 in the morning.”

Samantha continues to share more facts, likely to be no more than a nuisance to Republicans. The Center for American Progress reported in January of this year that sanctuary counties have 35.5 fewer crimes per 10,000 people in comparison to non-sanctuary counties. This includes Trump’s hometown of New York, where Rudy Giuliani commented in 2001 that he agreed with tolerance to undocumented people and that “they make a big contribution to the life of the city, and we’re much better off being sensible and practical about it.”

Samantha gave a theory for what happened to cause the radical change that we see in Giuliani today.

Next, the segment showcases the compassionate responses from law enforcement and heroic American Mayors, who are taking to the airwaves to defend the immigrants in their cities. Mayor Eric Garcetti from Los Angeles, Mayor Michael Hancock of Denver, Mayor Toni Harp of New Haven, Mayor Joe Curtatone of Somerville, and Mayor Marty Walsh from Boston are some of the Mayors who know that diversity is a strength, and that law enforcement is harder when witnesses to crime are afraid to come forward for fear of deportation.

While Press Secretary Sean Spicer said that Americans shouldn’t be “forced to subsidize this disregard for our laws,” Samantha points out that “Godless cities generate almost 85 percent of the country’s GDP” and most of our tax revenue.

As a result of this attack on sanctuary cities, a legal battle has already begun. Most ironically, though Trump appears to be doing everything in his power to destroy the federal government, he isn’t aware “States’ Rights” means the Feds can’t put a “financial gun to the head of local governments,” as Mayor Eric Garcetti of Los Angeles put it. Our undocumented immigrants need a clear path to citizenship, not to be treated as less than human or less than American.
