Republicans Prep To Butcher Medicare, Medicaid And Obamacare

The soul of right-wing conservatism is being exposed and it's not pretty

The soul of right-wing conservatism is being exposed and it’s not pretty.

Out from under the shadows, a mean-spirited, corporate-crony mentality is emerging from America’s unified Republican Party, led by Donald J. Trump. Among its priorities are taking access to health care away from seniors, disabled veterans, disabled children, and low-income workers. Medicare, Medicaid, and Obamacare are now on the table, ready to be cut up by radical right-wing Republican butchers.

The Great Bait and Switch

The Empowering Patients Act sounds like a great plan. That is by design. If lawmakers tried to garner public support for a bill called the Heath Care Phase Out Act, it would never pass. By tricking people into thinking that the richest nation on earth can’t afford to take care of its sick, the con will be played out.

As Paul Krugman points out on Alternet, Trump’s campaign trail promise to protect Medicare is turning out to be one of his biggest lies.

Donald Trump ran as the champion of the “forgotten man,” the working class, those left behind, supposedly. And, because he knew that undermining overwhelmingly popular and necessary entitlements like social security was a no-go, he promised to leave them alone. “I’m not going to cut Social Security like every other Republican and I’m not going to cut Medicare or Medicaid,” he declared.

Lie number .. . . 6,497? We’ve lost count.

Keep in mind that the ultimate goal here is to completely sever all government involvement in the health care of its citizens. This is evidenced in the plan to turn Medicare into a voucher program that bares an unmistakable resemblance to Obamacare subsidies. This is just another step toward ending Medicare completely.

In time, the same arguments made against Obamacare will be made against Medicare vouchers, namely, that they are not working. That statement will be true, because insurance companies will not be able to maintain long-term profitability if they insure seniors, disabled veterans, disabled children, and anyone with chronic conditions or cancer, without charging them unaffordable premiums.

Unsustainable Is An Understatement

At some point, it’s difficult to see how the US health care system can avoid caving in on itself. Seniors without Medicaid will no longer be able to live in nursing homes. Many will shut down. Hospitals, once filled with seniors on Medicare will have more empty beds. If they accept uninsured or under-insured patents, they will have a harder time getting paid for the expensive care that comes with aging. And even if medical bill collectors push patients into bankruptcy, they still may not be able to collect as much money as they want.

High-priced prescription drugs, even if they are life-saving, may simply not be an option for American’s of all ages, no matter how much they scrimp and save. Without insurance companies to foot the bills, Big Pharma will also face a shrinking market.

It’s hard to say how long this cycle could go on, but mathematically, it cannot be endless.

Fighting To Save Medicare, Medicaid, and Obamacare Is Critical

The Republican war on health care has been brewing for years. However, Democratic control of one or more legislative branches of government has stopped it. Beginning in January 2017, that safeguard will be gone.

If Republicans eventually succeed in phasing out all forms of government involvement in health care, it will become the only major nation on earth to do so. The changes to American life will be dramatic.

Without Medicare, Medicaid, or Obamacare, life itself will become a privilege reserved only for the young, healthy, and wealthy. Americans can’t let that happen.

Contact your member of Congress now by calling the Capitol switchboard at 202-224-3121. Tell them their political career will be over if they vote to take away your access to health care through Medicare, Medicaid and Obamacare.
