Republican Senator Warns That Trump Could Unleash Untold Global Destruction

As far as Republican Sen. Bob Corker is concerned, much more than Trump’s agenda is at stake.

Tennessee Republican Sen. Bob Corker sounds like a man who has been set free when it comes to criticizing Donald Trump. However, the Twitter storm that erupted over the weekend between the two is a sign of a bigger rift between establishment Republicans and the struggling Trump agenda.

In addition to expressing fears that Trump might start “World War III,” Corker told the New York Times,

Mr. Trump poses such an acute risk, the senator said, that a coterie of senior administration officials must protect him from his own instincts. “I know for a fact that every single day at the White House, it’s a situation of trying to contain him,” Mr. Corker said in a telephone interview.

Corker’s new-found freedom of expression is likely tied to his decision to not seek reelection in 2018. It has also enabled him to say the things some other Republicans are afraid to admit.

The Washington Post was quick to unpack the subtle and no-so-subtle claims by Sen. Corker about Trump’s fitness for office.

Corker declined to answer when asked if he believes Trump is unfit for the presidency. But the only reasonable way to read all these comments is as a declaration that Trump is indeed unfit — and that most Republicans know it. After all, Corker had previously said that Trump’s inner circle is helping to “separate our country from chaos.” Now he has added that Trump needs to be restrained by his inner circle from devolving into conduct that could end up unleashing untold global destruction — and that most Republicans know it.

While Trump clings to an unwavering base of about 30%, the rest of the GOP is scrambling to figure out how to politically cash in on their party’s unified control of the government, without admitting that just having an “R” behind Trump’s has anything to do with party unity.
