Repealing Obamacare Will Add $1 Trillion To The Deficit

and give a tax break to the rich

Republicans may pretend to care about the budget deficit, but their actions suggest nothing could be farther from the truth. In their reckless obsession with getting rid of Obamacare, so-called conservatives are on the brink of blowing $1 trillion hole in the federal deficit.

According to the Washington Post,

In a dramatic reversal, many members of the hard-line House Freedom Caucus said Thursday they are prepared later this month to support a budget measure that would explode the deficit and increase the public debt to more than $29.1 trillion by 2026, figures contained in the budget resolution itself.

Those ‘figures’ (PDF) include the real costs of taking health care away from upwards of 20 million Americans. While hard-line conservatives might believe that nothing else matters but getting rid of Obamacare, if they think this is what their constituents want, they aren’t reading the polls.

As CBS News reports, a recent Kaiser Family Foundation poll found that “only one in four Americans wants President-elect Donald Trump to entirely repeal his predecessor’s health care law that extended coverage to millions.”

Obamacare is not perfect. But it is also not the nightmare Republicans and right-wing talking heads have made it out to be. After years of bashing and brainwashing, the GOP base responds like Pavlov’s dog when they hear the word ‘Obamacare.’ But now that they are in real danger of losing it, they are snapping out of their trance.

Whether or not Republicans prove just how little they care about the deficit and the health of the American people will soon become evident. And their actions will also expose the real motives.

According to the Tax Policy Center,

Repealing the Affordable Care Act would cut taxes significantly for the highest income one percent of US households… At the same time, it would raise taxes on average for low and moderate-income households.

The long-term problems with the U.S. healthcare system will not be addressed by repealing the ACA, and will likely make things worse. Unless lawmakers address the reason for constantly rising health care costs, the only way to limit spending is to keep cutting benefits. And the only reason to do that is to protect the profits of Big Pharma and medical providers.

So far, no one in Washington seems ready to come right out and say, this problem will never be solved without removing the profit motive from our health care system, as every other country in the civilized world has already done. However, that would piss off the donor class and lobbyists who are working against the idea that health care is a right, not a privileged.

The truth of the matter is, if the D.C. spin-masters spent as much time and money promoting Medicare For All as they did bashing Obamacare, the problem would have already been solved.
