NASCAR’s Dale Earnhardt Jr. Just Ruined Trump’s Day With This JFK Quote

Donald Trump spent the weekend attacking professional football players for kneeling during the national anthem and unleashed a wave of controversy that almost certainly isn’t playing out the way he expected. In response to his comments, more NFL players protested on Sunday than ever before. As if this wasn’t enough of a blow to poor Trump and his bloated ego, Dale Earnhardt Jr. just ruined his day completely with a poignant quote from John F. Kennedy.

“All Americans R granted rights 2 peaceful protests,” Earnhardt tweeted Monday. “Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable-JFK.”

Earnhardt’s tweet comes after Trump called for football players to be fired for kneeling during the national anthem.

“Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, ‘Get that son of a bitch off the field right now. Out. He’s fired. He’s FIRED!’” Trump said during his speech in Alabama on Friday.

On Saturday, Trump renewed his attacks via Twitter and he hasn’t shut up about it since. On Sunday, the NFL collectively told him to shove it as players throughout the league chose to kneel or lock arms and some even refused to leave the locker room during the national anthem. Trump’s has continued his online temper tantrum.

Several NASCAR owners were apparently disappointed that their sport was being left out of the debate and just had to weigh in to say they would not tolerate drivers protesting this way. Former NASCAR champion Richard Petty told the Associated Press that if any member of his team were to protest during the national anthem he would fire them on the spot. Trump was naturally thrilled with their remarks and couldn’t wait to tell Twitter all about it.

“So proud of NASCAR and its supporters and fans,” he tweeted early Monday morning. “They won’t put up with disrespecting our Country or our Flag – they said it loud and clear!”

But Earnhardt just isn’t having it. Unfortunately for Trump, Earnhardt isn’t the only unexpected voice of condemnation speaking out against his latest attacks on the First Amendment. Tom Brady, who had been friends with Trump for years and supported him up until now, said on Monday that he “disagrees” with Trump’s “divisive” rhetoric.

“I certainly disagree with what he said,” he said. “I thought it was just divisive. I just want to support my teammates. I am never one to say, ‘Oh, that is wrong. That is right.’ I do believe in what I believe in. I believe in bringing people together and respect and love and trust. Those are the values that my parents instilled in me.”

Meanwhile, Trump is still ranting against players who protest by taking a knee. On Monday morning he continued his Twitter tantrum. “The issue of kneeling has nothing to do with race,” he tweeted. “It is about respect for our Country, Flag and National Anthem. NFL must respect this!”

This tweet may be the most absurd of all because the “issue of kneeling” actually has everything to do with race because that is the very reason Colin Kaepernick (the first player to kneel) was protesting in the first place. The entire point of Kaepernick’s kneeling was to protest the epidemic of unarmed black men killed at the hands of the police officers who are sworn to serve and protect them. Like usual though, Trump is desperate to twist the narrative to fit his bigoted agenda. What their protest has “nothing to do with” is disrespect of the military.

Trump would be well served by listening to Earnhardt but I wouldn’t suggest that anybody hold their breath. He tried to bully the NFL into submission and what he got in return was a giant middle finger. They are not willing to be silenced and neither are the millions of Americans who believe black lives should matter.
