Mike Huckabee Calls For An End To Democratically Elected Senators Because His Team Lost

Mike Huckabee — father of Sarah Huckabee Sanders — has decided after his party lost on what is now dubbed “Failure Friday,” that we should change the way we elect our Senators.`

The 17th amendment reads, in part:

“The Senate of the United States shall be composed of two Senators from each State, elected by the people thereof, for six years…”

What Mike Huckabee seems to be having a problem with is the people electing representatives to represent them. Huckabee’s comment can only be taken to mean that we should have state legislators select the Senators that would represent said state. This would mean that unelected Senators could do the bidding of whoever they might be beholden to, even if that command goes against the will of the people they represent.

Purely un-American as one Susan Money was ready to let Mike Huckabee know. Her response was blistering:

And yet, she persisted:

The pain inflicted by this sound logic seemed to drive Mike Huckabee even more bananas this morning:

Maybe Huckabee doesn’t realize just why this is so un-American? Maybe he doesn’t understand how democracy works? Is this the reason why he never won his party’s primary despite making three horribly failed attempts at running for the Republican Presidential nomination?

Or maybe Mike Huckabee just thinks we the people are too incompetent to elect our own leaders. Regardless of how we feel about some of the people in the Senate — like the 49 that voted to toss millions of people off of health care — they are duly elected by the people they represent and fear of losing their job keeps them in check.

Mike Huckabee wants that fear diminished to non-existent. That’s kind of scary when people with an influence on the voting population start saying things you would expect to hear from a third world despot. Then again, we are getting used to hearing that in our own nation, directly from the man currently occupying 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

The funny part is, even if Huckabee had his way, the bill still would have lost. Five Republican governors opposed the legislation which would have cut funding to their states. Funding that they utilize to help their people. How do you think they would tell their Senators to vote?

There are three Republican heroes in this story. While all deserve your thanks, there are two that deserve it more than anyone.

Republicans failed in their attempt to cost vulnerable Americans their lives. While we are all grateful for John McCain’s swing vote that kept Obamacare in tact, the real heroes are two women from the north: Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins. They were steadfast, even though men in their own party threatened them with death and physical harm. If you called Senators to get them to vote no, make sure you call these two women and thank them for having the backbone to defend their people.

Lisa Murkowski’s number in Washington DC is:  (202) 224-6665

Susan Collins’ number in Washington DC is: (202) 224-2523

Show these two women some appreciation today while you enjoy the sweet taste of victory.
