Former National Security Adviser Mike Flynn is quickly going broke thanks to the bills that are stacking up from his legal defense. ABC News is reporting that “relatives of retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, one of the key subjects of multiple investigations into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, made a rare public statement Monday to call attention to the ‘tremendous financial burden’ the probes are placing on former advisers to President Donald Trump.”
Flynn has found himself at the center of the investigation into the possible (probable) collusion between the Russian government and Donald Trump’s presidential campaign. Not surprisingly for a case of this magnitude, Flynn’s legal defense could cost a whopping $10,000,000:
‘The enormous expense of attorneys’ fees and other related expenses far exceed their ability to pay,’ said Michael Flynn’s siblings Joe Flynn and Barbara Redgate.Stephen Gillers, an ethics expert who holds the Elihu Root Chair at New York University School of Law, says defending a felony prosecution can cost as much as $10 million, and he is adamant about a defendant’s right to raise money to offset those expenses.
Flynn’s family has turned to crowdfunding in an effort to support the growing costs of his legal defense. In a plea for donations, Flynn’s siblings wrote, “Mike devoted 33 years of his life to our country serving in the United States Army, spending years away from his family while he fought this nation’s battles overseas, including the war on terror.”
Flynn’s legal woes and the exorbitant bills that go along with them are only expected to grow in the coming days as special counsel Robert Mueller continues to nail Trump and his crooked cronies to the wall for their multitude of crimes. It is also likely that Flynn won’t be the only one who ends up in either prison or the poor house — or both — before all is said and done.
