How many of you recall what happened when our former President, Barack Obama, wanted to address our students across this land on the issue of civics? Conservatives lost their collective minds, right? In light of that response, I wonder just how conservatives will respond to this latest news.
Forty-Five spoke at the Boy Scout Jamboree, last night, which is held every four years. He began his speech telling the crowd, “Tonight we put aside all of the policy fights in Washington, D.C., you’ve been hearing about with the fake news, then asking, “I said, who the Hell wants to talk about politics when I’m in front of the Boy Scouts?” Great question. Sadly, however, Forty-Five could not take his own advice.
Reminiscing over his electoral victory, he told the audience of what was estimated to be 30,000 to 40,000 Scouts and their leaders,
“You remember that incredible night with the maps,” reminding his listeners that the maps were ‘so red’ that pundits were ‘speechless.”
Then, Forty-Five really kicked it into gear. Here are some highlights of his most indoctrinating moments.
By the way, just a question: Did President Obama ever come to a Jamboree?” [Boos]
Forty-Five continued his politicizing of the group by adding:
“We won, and won so when they said there is no way to victory, there is no way to 270; you know, I went to Maine four times because it’s 1 vote but we won. One vote. I went there because I kept hearing we’re 269, but then Wisconsin came in; many, many years. Michigan came in. So, and we worked hard there and you know my opponent didn’t work hard there. Because she was told…. [Audience Boos]
And, then there was this gem:
“The polls that’s also fake news. Their fake polls. But the polls [inaudible]. But we won Wisconsin, so I have to tell you what we did in all fairness to you, and all the millions and millions of people that came out and voted for Make America Great Again.” [Applause]
And, “By the way, under the Trump Administration, you’ll be saying Merry Christmas again when you go shopping, believe me. Merry Christmas.”
As chants of “USA! USA!” on top of the other chants of “We love Trump” Forty-Five turned his attention to Tom Price: “Secretary Tom Price is also here today: Dr. Price still lives the Scout Oath helping to keep millions of Americans strong and healthy as our Secretary of Health and Human Services. That’s odd! Price is trying to rip health insurance away from a minimum of 22 million citizens who could be covered under the current law. Looking at Price, Forty-Five asked, “By the way, you going to get the votes?” Price responds, with “Hope so,” to which Forty-Five responds in traditional fashion, “He better get ’em. Ah, he better…..otherwise, I’ll say, ‘Tom, you’re fired! [Applause]
Here are some highlights:
The Boy Scouts of America issued the following statement Monday night:
“The Boy Scouts of America is wholly non-partisan and does not promote any one position, product, service, political candidate or philosophy. The invitation for the sitting U.S. President to visit the National Jamboree is a long-standing tradition and is in no way an endorsement of any political party or specific policies.” Their statement continues, “The sitting U.S. President serves as the BSA’s honorary president. It is our long-standing custom to invite the U.S. President to the National Jamboree.”
During the speech, the Scouts also erupted into a chant of the ten words which comprise the Boy Scout Law “Helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent.”
While Forty-Five did manage to weave a few of the attributes of Boy Scouts, adding, “the scout law says, a scout is trustworthy, loyal,” Trump said, before adding, “We could use some more loyalty, I will tell you that.” Whether Forty-Five was referencing his displeasure with Republicans or his Attorney General, who was not at the event despite his being a Boy Scout, only Forty-Five knows.
Make no mistake: THIS is what indoctrination looks like, folks; not what the former President did. Will conservatives react to this news with outrage or hypocrisy?
