‘Melania Trump’ Hilariously Defends Convention Speech On Colbert’s ‘Late Show’ (VIDEO)

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.” — “Melania Trump”

If the Melania Trump plagiarism controversy during this week’s disastrous opening night of the 2016 Republican National Convention was the worst of times, last night’s cold open of Stephen Colbert’s live Late Show was the best of times.

With an impressive and dead-on interpretation of Melania Trump, Broadway stage star and “Supergirl” actress Laura Benanti joined Stephen Colbert to poke a little fun at this week’s ongoing RNC shenanigans.  The bit, filmed live following Tuesday night’s episode of “This Week In The Skewering Of Hilary Clinton,” took a shot at the Melania’s cribbed speech with a genius mash-up of literary and pop-culture references from Charles Dickens to Dr. Seuss, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air to Braveheart, Benanti breaking only occasionally to strike a dramatic super-model pout.

I did not plagiarize my speech last night. I would never do such a thing. I could not, would not with a goat. I would not, could not on a boat.

So to those who say I stole my speech, I say gimme a break, gimme a break, break me off a piece of that Kit Kat bar. They may be able to take our lives, but they will never be able to take our freedom. I am mad as hell and I am not going take it anymore. You’ve got to fight for your right to party. Boom goes the dynamite! Hakuna Matata! Ba-da-ba-da-da… I’m lovin’ it. Oh, and one more thing: Live from New York, it’s Saturday night!

In what may often seem the worst of times, relishing in a bit of lighthearted foolishness can be wisdom for the ages.

Bwha-ha-ha-ha… I’m lovin’ it!
