John McCain has had a rough going from the electorate. When he was running against George Bush, Karl Rove started floating some of his Texas turds to the media that were some of the most slanderous lies ever shown in any political theater. Rove and other Republican operatives spread a rumor that he had an illegitimate black child, that he was insane from his 5 years of captivity and worst of all, that he was a traitor. He was ‘swift-boated’ just as John Kerry was, by his own Navy Vets. It was the unkindest cut of all.
McCain again suffered from the magnanimous incompetence of George W. Bush after turning surpluses into the largest deficits ever known. He certainly didn’t help himself when he chose half-term governor Bible Spice as a running mate but no Republican paid him the disrespect that he endured Rove’s gang of miscreants. The President didn’t have to do much besides give them all the rope they needed and let them do all the work. It was a humiliating defeat for McCain.
He could have retired to Arizona and lived out his days as an elder statesman with a notable record of passing the McCain/Feingold act which changed campaign finance laws. He would have been respected on both sides of the aisle if Republicans had just let it go but the Koch Brothers were having none of that money-restriction guff. But the narcotic of power proved too great a temptation for an angry old man after his signature legislation was overturned by the ‘activist’ judges he often complains about, though these were the conservative activist judges that turned McCain/Feingold into a footnote in an otherwise unblemished political career.
Then the Tea Party insurgents happened.
In 2010, McCain was forced to spend $20 million against the Tea party choice of J. D. Hayworth who forced McCain into moving to the right. And by ‘right’ I mean into the lunatic fringe. It was a cavalcade of shameless pandering to people who wanted to put President Obama in front of a firing squad for being a Muslim usurper. Democrats hardly ever said anything about McCain because the tea partiers were doing so much worse than they ever hoped to do.
He got in bed with the preppers and militia types in the quest to remain in power. After Republicans won the House, the tea party began to feel their oats and proceeded to oust every vulnerable RINO they could primary which happened to McCain’s close friend Dick Lugar who had served in the senate with him for decades.
The *new* code of conduct was that anything the president wanted, was to be opposed. Anything that made Obama look good, was to be opposed. Absolutely anything he wanted to get done was to be obstructed at all costs. When Republicans wanted to torpedo Sonia Sotomayor’s nomination for the Supreme Court, several Republicans crossed the aisle and didn’t deny the president his appointment.
Republicans have had control of the Supreme Court for 46 years. They have successfully moved everything to the right, gun rights, property rights and church rights. They have tried with all their religious fervor to take away abortion rights. Republicans don’t like rights that conflict with their religious beliefs. In the year 2016, we must still re-litigate that right because every single time Republicans gain a majority in any legislative house, they begin passing restrictions on abortion first.
Are your roads and bridges falling apart? Are you worried about cyberbullying perhaps? How about human trafficking in the US? Would you like to see that gone? While there are obviously more pressing concerns on the minds of Americans, Republicans uniformly pay homage to their base by first trying to abolish a woman’s right to bodily autonomy. They’ve failed 100% of the time thanks to ‘the activist judges’ that were taught to uphold the constitution.
In a more dastardly effort to deny those rights, Republicans began passing bill after bill to defund Planned Parenthood to the detriment of their fellow Americans. They don’t care how many people they condemn by passing laws that require abortion doctors to have admitting privileges, they only care if they spend millions in litigation to stop just one abortion. This is what passes as the ‘party of fiscal responsibility.’
Contortions and abortions.
The fact that this is the first opportunity in 46 years to wrestle the Supreme Court out of the hands of conservative religious zealots like Antonin Scalia makes this election the most consequential election of my lifetime. Republicans naturally know this and are at full froth trying to prevent this from happening such that Republicans refuse to fulfill their oaths of office and confirm the appointments from the President. This has not happened in our history.
After many Republicans urged President Obama to nominate Merrick Garland to the court, as soon as he did, Republicans suddenly and peculiarly were against his nomination. Why would they oppose a perfectly qualified judge that they confirmed with glee to the US Court of Appeals? Well that would be Obama’s 3rd judicial nominee and they certainly can’t agree with Obama about anything. So, for the first time in American history, we had Republicans refusing to do their constitutional duty.
John McCain is a bitter and aggrieved old man. He has enjoyed all the consideration a vet who served his country in the Hanoi Hilton for 5 years merits. His very survival of that torture is miraculous. He could have left years before he did but he refused to leave until all left. It was an astounding act of Esprit de Corp that future generations should study and celebrate such a valiant man.
John McCain has disgraced that legacy and should be thrown out, head first, from the body politic. He is a shell of a man he once was with the putrid slime of sedition now coursing through his veins.
Yesterday, the Senator said the following in a radio interview. Whether McCain is suffering from senile dementia is not yet clear, what is clear is that he along with his Republican colleagues intend to subvert the authority of Hillary Clinton should she win the presidency.
“I promise you that we will be united against any Supreme Court nominee that Hillary Clinton, if she were president, would put up.”
This shell of a man, this disgusting liar, this abominable coward has become all that he once hated. Such is the price of partisanship in this day and age. So great is their hatred for democracy that they have promised to continue their deliberate petulance should Hillary beat the Republican nominee that McCain withdrew his endorsement of!
If Trump is unworthy of holding office or appointing justices of any kind and the American People deliver Hillary Clinton into the White House, who are you McCain to subvert the will of the people? You sick vestige of white privilege!
There is but one word that is applied to those who betray friend, principle and country. Traitor be thy name John Sidney McCain III.
