Jobs Report: Trump Is Not Creating Them

Trump sold himself to voters as the greatest job creator that ever walked the earth. But like so many of his other outrageous campaign trail fables, the one about his ‘bigly’ job creating skills is not backed up by facts in the latest jobs report.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics report released on April 7, 2017,

Total non-farm payroll employment edged up by 98,000 in March, following gains of 219,000 in February and 216,000 in January. Over the month, employment growth occurred in professionals and business services (+56,000) and in mining (+11,000), while retail trade lost jobs (-30,000).

Trump’s pro-coal, pro-pollution agenda is not a driving force in the overall economy, as the jobs report data shows. That’s because there are only about 174,000 coal mining and industry-related jobs in the U.S., compared to more than 4.8 millions retail jobs, according to the BLS.

Since America’s economy is consumer-driven, genuine growth has to reach more than one, dying, antiquated industry. Allowing coal companies to poison our water does nothing to solve this economic reality.

Trump may believe that catering to Big Polluters and a handful of coal miners is a winning political scheme, but reality has a way of catching up to an administration known to be detached from the truth. For the U.S. economy to thrive, consumers have to be confident that their future is secure, and the government needs to do some steering. That’s going to be hard to achieve with a White House in chaos, terrified immigrants, and an increase in pollution that threatens to sicken and kill Americans, many of whom don’t know if they’ll continue to have access to health care with a continuing GOP push to use Obamacare as a piggy bank for another tax cut for the rich.

If this is Trump’s version of making America great, he must be living with ‘alternative facts.’
