More than 100 gay men have been thrown in concentration camps in the Republic of Chechnya as an alleged purge of those in the nation’s LGBTQ community is being perpetrated by the state. The concentration camps are the first to be established for those in the LGBTQ community since the end of the second world war. All this occurring amid a wave of homophobia sweeping Eastern Europe as right-wing fascist extremism continues to rise in the region.
A prison camp for the persecuted has allegedly been built-in the town of Argun, Chechnya according to the International Business Times.

“For several weeks now, a brutal campaign against LGBTQ people has been sweeping through Chechnya. Law enforcement and security agency officials under control of the ruthless head of the Chechen Republic, Ramzan Kadyrov, have rounded up dozens of men on suspicion of being gay, torturing and humiliating the victims,” reads a report from Human Rights Watch.
“I call on the Chechen authorities to clarify the situation with the persecution of gay men in the country. The European Parliament strongly condemns any form of harassment and discrimination against people because of their sexual orientation, race, religion and political affiliation,” said Antonio Tajani, head of the European Parliament, according to Novaya Gazeta.
The Chechen leader, Ramzan Kadyrov, gave a rather dark and foreboding response in regards to the allegations of concentration camps:
“If there were such people in Chechnya, law-enforcement agencies wouldn’t need to have anything to do with them because their relatives would send them somewhere from which there is no returning,” he said. An obvious allusion to murdering other human beings because of their sexual orientation being supported by the Chechen government.
Kadyrov’s ties to Putin ensure his place as leader of Chechnya
Ramzan Kadyrov is also suspected of murdering Boris Nemtsov in 2015, a political opponent of Putin’s who was the former Deputy Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation. It is certainly dangerous to be a liberal in Putin’s Russia.
This was also likely the reason Ramzan Kadyrov had significant support from the Kremlin when he took over as the leader of the embattled republic.
Looking at how Putin deals with the nations surrounding Russia and how he has pulled the strings to set up puppet governments should certainly set off alarms. The predicament the U.S is currently in with a President that possibly colluded with the Kremlin to overthrow American democracy certainly bears striking overtones to the style of politician Putin tends to favor. Resist.
