Right-Wing Priorities: The Case Of Shep Smith And The Angry Mob

Shepard Smith's mug shot.
Shepard Smith's mug shot. He had to pay $10,000 in bail so he could rejoin network coverage of the 2000 elections.

Democrats who have an eye on FOX News know that the network’s anchor, Shepard Smith, has been living up to his name, leading flocks of Americans to the truer points of the endless left-right rift over Donald Trump’s reported lies and claims.  FOX viewers are flabbergasted, they’re frustrated and unsure what to do with this man whose network is constantly praised by Trump.

They are, in fact, calling for him to be fired because he dares to be truthful, occasionally.

You have to love the tweets from traditional FOX supporters…

“BOYCOTT Shepard Smith on FOX News. FOX News, please dump Shepard Smith. He’s ruining your newscast.”

“Shepard Smith should be fired. Left are professional victims. Offending them comes w/ the territory.”

“Shepard Smith might as well be on the payroll of the Democrat Party. I turn him off whenever I see him. Fox needs to drain their own swamp.”

“When are you going to do something about Shepard Smith???????? You’re gonna lose a lot of us over his hatred of President Trump!!!”

Seething comments, as many as you could ever stomach reading – a virtual angry mob. They want justice, this man to lose his job because of the sin of calling Trump out for some of his blatant lies. He has lost their respect as a journalist because he reports facts and won’t stick to telling them what they want to hear. For this, they would drive him out.

Priorities, people, priorities.

The real truth about Shepard Smith is that he isn’t exactly a kind human being.

Shepard Smith has a side that he doesn’t want the public to know about. Incorrigible, fit throwing Smith has been arrested for intentionally striking another journalist with his car. He’s also notorious for his treatment of women. A waitress in NYC told Gawker that Smith grabbed her elbow one night and screamed, “Get my f*cking drink!”  Slate wrote about the night in question, “Smith had arrived earlier that night with a straight couple and his own regular date, a muscular 6-foot-2 30-something white male, whom Bathtub Gin employees refer to as ‘his boyfriend.’” Smith’s sexuality isn’t news at all, but he sure works for a network that has had its hand in gay bashing over the years.

Charge Dropped

Smith’s arrest during his network’s coverage of the 2000 presidential election debacle in Florida saw him tossed in the slammer, he had to pay $10,000 in bail so he could get back to covering the election.  He allegedly drove his car into another journalist who was holding a parking space for a colleague. Maureen Walsh of Tennessee, a freelance journalist, was transported to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital and later released after being treated for bruises on her legs and knees.

Walsh told police that around 2:00 p.m. on Nov. 17, 2000, she was standing on Monroe Street across from the Florida State Capitol, in one of the few empty parking spaces, in a parking lot jammed with satellite news trucks.  Walsh was attempting to save the space for a colleague who was expected to arrive.  When Smith came barreling up in his personal vehicle. A sergeant with the Florida Capital Police, Edwin Maxwell, told the St. Petersburg Times,  “He shouted some profanities at her and basically just struck her, striking her at the knees, which threw her up on the car.”

Smith reportedly got out of his car, shut the door and walked past her, across Monroe Street to the Capitol, where he and a dozen other television reporters had set up makeshift studios for their live broadcasts. Smith hosts a report that begins at 2:30 p.m.

The charges against Smith were later dropped, according to a representative in the state attorney’s office.  As World Net Daily reported, “The superstar television personality also went unpunished by his employer, the Fox News Network. Fox spokeswoman Irena Stefan characterized the case earlier this year as a non-story, saying there is ‘no news to report here.’ She also explained that Smith had not been reprimanded by the network ‘because no charge has been made.’”

Where were all of his GOP critics then?

It seems reasonable to assume that viewers would be put off by the type of public behavior Smith is known for.  But none of that mattered to the far-flung rightists except that the man worshiped their orange-haired hero.  Smith, in spite of his outrageous behavior, has been unabashedly bashing Trump, sometimes for several minutes at a time.  He cites the most blatant, easily disproved lies which Trump spouts on an extremely regular basis.

Hitting a woman with his car, abusing waitstaff, and being a general asshole is forgivable to them as long as he kneels at the Trump shrine. But, for this, they would have him banished:

Gotta love those priorities.
