Trump is proving once again that whatever he said on the campaign trail was nothing but a scam to get working class voters to jump on the Trump Train. His new, proposed budget takes an axe to safety net programs, many of which his base voters depend on.
According to the Washington Post:
Trump’s first major budget proposal on Tuesday will include massive cuts to Medicaid and call for changes to anti-poverty programs…
In addition to throwing millions of low-income workers off Medicaid rolls, food and housing assistance programs would also be slashed, along with Supplemental Security Income (SSI) that millions of disabled adults and children need to survive.
As if that weren’t cruel enough, the Trump plan could impose stringent work requirements for both Medicaid and SNAP (food stamp) benefits.
The justification for punishing the poor is even more pathetic. The Washington Post report adds,
Michael Tanner, a welfare expert at the libertarian Cato Institute, said the U.S. government spends between $680 billion and $800 billion a year on anti-poverty programs, and considering wholesale changes to many of these initiatives is worthwhile…
‘We’re not seeing the type of gains we should be seeing for all that spending, and that would suggest its time to reform the system,” he said.
Outside the right-wing bubble, more moderate voices are sounding an alarm.
Robert Greenstein, the president of the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, told WaPo,“The indications are strong this budget will feature Robin-Hood-in-reverse policies in an unprecedented scale.”
The spin on the Republican side is drenched in government waste propaganda that poorly disguises the real intent of their reverse Robin Hood scheme. Trump’s budget is an income inequality-exploding scheme that’s a gift to Trump and his swamp-dwelling, billionaire buddies.
The Atlantic reports:
Republican efforts to cap and cut Medicaid make pretty clear that the strategy is to pay for tax cuts that largely benefit the highest earners…
Rationing care to fund high-income tax cuts is not just the byproduct of the Republican Medicaid plan, but rather at the heart of it. The motivation of nearly every GOP health-care proposal past and present—to end the guarantee of coverage for those eligible for Medicaid, and replace it with spending caps—has always had more to do with supply-side fiscal policy than health-care reform.
The Boston Globe calls-out Trump’s budget proposal for the disaster it truly is.
A social and fiscal nightmare, a mélange of fraudulent precepts and broken promises which augur worse to come…
It attacks the most vulnerable Americans, including his working-class base…Victims include rural communities — Trump strongholds.
The take-over of Washington by Trump and his greedy minions was never about making America great. It was about taking from people who have to work for a living in the cruelest ways possible, and turning America into a toxic waste dump in the process.
There’s really only one sure-fire way to put an end to this madness; get out and vote in 2018 for every Democrat on the ballot as though your life depended on it, because in reality, it does.
