VP Mike Pence was supposed to be the righteous, God-fearing, non-scandalous adult in the room. But now, Rachel Maddow reports, Russiagate investigator Bob Mueller has him in his sights.
Many of those who oppose the GOP’s president — including this writer — warn their fellow #resisters that impeaching him won’t solve the problem, because then we’d be stuck with Mike Pence. But it turns out the man who would be a heartbeat away from the presidency — if he had a heart — also appears to be complicit in the Trump campaign and administration’s (alleged!) dealings with Russia. He may look all silver-haired and presidential, but The Intercept reports the former Indiana governor is a hardcore Christian Dominionist who was highly unpopular in his his state.
And despite his squeaky-clean reputation — Mike Pence frets about his purity so much he refuses to lunch or dine with his female colleagues without his wife present — he’s been caught in what appear to be compromising positions. Alas for him, all those angry squints and gritted teeth have failed to take the heat off him. Rachel Maddow’s brought up her concerns about Mike Pence before. Aside from his vicious anti-gay extremism, his repeated denials of dealings with Russia have attracted unwanted attention.
Back in July, Rachel Maddow explained that Mike Pence’s role as the person in charge of Donald Trump’s transition team should have known if any meetings with Russian agents took place on his watch. On Thursday night’s edition of The Rachel Maddow Show, she revisited this subject.
“Just take the people in the Trump campaign and the Trump administration who insist publicly there had been no contacts between the Trump campaign and Russians during the presidential contest,” she proclaimed, adding: “We know there were.” Then, Rachel Maddow went on. “Numerous people on Trump’s campaign team said that publicly. Paul Manafort said that publicly. Kellyanne Conway said that publicly. Hope Hicks said that publicly. Donald Trump Jr. said that publicly. Attorney General Jeff Sessions said that publicly. Under oath. Mike Pence said that publicly.”
Oh, and speaking of Mike Pence, Rachel Maddow reported, “Mike Pence did bluntly assert multiple times that there had been no contacts between the Trump campaign and Russians during the campaign.”
She then indignantly added:
“That was false. Mike Pence’s bluntly asserted that Trump national security adviser Mike Flynn had never talked to the Russians about sanctions. That was false. Mike Pence bluntly asserted that he had no idea Mike Flynn had foreign business ties, even though Pence was running the transition when the transition was notified multiple times in writing and in person by Flynn’s lawyers that yeah, Flynn had foreign business ties. Mike Pence bluntly asserted that the president fired FBI Director James Comey because the president got a recommendation to do so from the Justice Department. We now know that Vice President Pence received a letter from the president outlining exactly why he wanted to fire James Comey — a day before the Justice Department even wrote that recommendation.”
Yikes. Things really aren’t looking good for Mike Pence. Especially since Rachel Maddow says she’s just talking about stuff she came up with “off the top of her head.”
“And that’s literally just the stuff we know about the vice president in terms of the lies that we know he has told specifically about Russia and that’s just the ones I can come up with off of the top of my head. Give me a few days and I can give you quite a list.”
Meanwhile, Bob Mueller’s closing in. CNN reports the former FBI director plans to interview — or grill, if you prefer — White House Staff about Donald Trump Jr.’s meeting at Trump Tower with Natalia Veselnitskaya and other Russian operatives about “Russian adoption.”
